God's Pocket - Aug 2017

Post by YellowEye »

Howdy Folks!
ScubaJess, Dave Bennet, myself, and several others just got back from another great trip up to God's Pocket (near Port Hardy BC, northwest diving mecca). It was another great trip as usual. The staff was great, boat was great, food good, divemaster excellent.

Viz was bad, as one might expect for this time of the year. Tides also were bad. But we went this timeframe because Bill's getting his knee replace in October, when we originally reserved for. We definitely want to see Bill get well!

Some of the highlights of the dives were:
+ Tons of red Irish lords of as many colors and patterns
+ Going to Barry Island. I've never been out there before, and was utterly amazed at the number of basket stars. They were everywhere, in all sizes -- it was insane! The site is mostly known for the clusters of small white and orange gregorian corrals that begin at about 70 feet. So cool!
+ Tons of baby rockfish
+ Plenty of decorated warbonnets
+ Octo in the open
+ Several wolfeel
+ Gorgeous clusters of stalked tunicates

Good news, though not in writing yet, is that it is likely that the lease will be renewed for another 30 years! Keep crossing your fingers that Bill will see it in writing soon!

Sad news, though not entirely surprising, is that acorn barnacles had taken over several areas of the reefs. This was mostly in the current shadows and stiller parts of the reef. Quite sad. Bill didn't know about it, he always appreciates insights on observations during dives.

Can't wait to go back!!

Here were some of the snaps

Those are some great pics by both!
I hope to stay at God's Pocket sometime. Fortunately I got to go up there on the Nautilus Swell a few years ago, while it was still a great dive charter.

Eric, I really like the lighting on the basking star photo and am very jealous of the GPO pic. Jess, that warbonnet pic is very good.
