Scooter run to the PB4Y this morning

Post by Chris Borgen »

My dive buddy Erik Foreman and I did a scooter run out to the PB4Y this morning like we usually do every month or so. I decided to haul the camera along. Visibility was the usual 5-10 feet. Like always this was a fun dive and one of the best in the lake. If you don't know what the PB4Y is, its a 4 engine bomber just off Magnuson Park in 150 ffw. More information can be found here: http://www.dcsfilms.com/Site_4/PB4Y_Privateer.html

Here are the pics from the dive:

Wow, the pictures sure make the visibility look better than that! If diving the bomber looked like that, I'd do it more often . . .

AWESOME pics!!

Last time we did it on scoots from Magnus Park, the police was not very happy and met us at the dock when we surfaced..

Has the line been fixed? I heard it was broken at about 30-40ft??

Really?? We have never had a problem with police there. The line is "fixed" but there is a bunch of line everywhere out there, so its not exactly a straight forward.

Yup, a boater callled them as we left for the dive and they were close to citing us for entering at the boat launch as well as diving the lake without surface support and dive flags..

They were more upset that they had trail our bubbles with the police boat for 90minutes before we surfaced and that probably lead to some frustration..

But like I said, an ass of a boater called them because we were probably in his way where we parked to unload...

I think there are plans to jump a line from the beach area next door to the current line in order to stay away from the boat launch and avoid police issues..

Nice...yeah we usually enter the water at the very left of the boat launch as your looking at the lake. Usually people come up to us asking about our rebreathers and such, weve never run into any issues, but then again we are usually there at 7:30am to do a pre work dive. I heard that someone already ran line from that park southward, not sure why as a simple compass heading directly south till you cross a line would work just fine too, but to each their own.

The unsolvable issue is that its not legal to "swim" more than 50ft from shore without a boat escort. And its not legal to dive without being accompanied by a boat displaying a dive flag.
AND
Its not legal to dive within 300ft of a public boat ramp or dock with Seacrest (Alki) being specifically excepted.

I'm not surprised you avoided a ticket, SPD has never to my knowledge cited people for violating these ordinances. But scootering the Bomber from shore will never be legal without going to the City Council to make its so and that isn't going to happen. So maintain an ultralow profile to avoid this becoming an enforcement issue peoples.

So, it's cloak and Dräger then?

No bubbles is a plus.
Also early AM
Certainly winter only, you'd be nuts to do this from shore in summer or fall.

Obviously they aren't giving tickets right now but aren't too happy about it either. If there are more SPD "unhappy" days I imagine they'll start giving tickets.

There are various boat owners on the board who go to the Bomber off and on...

Sure. Not sure when exactly. I still owe Austin a trip back to the Bomber, we got blown around the corner to the Harpoon a few months ago.

I think she was referring to the need for surface support when "swimming" more than 50' from shore. Pay teenager $20 and have them follow the bubbles in a rowboat with a flag. You are now in compliance with the city's law (Not sure about the CG)

Yeah I know but why bother to scooter at that point?

I think this is more a problem during "boating season." You know, that 2 weeks in the summer, when it's nice out? Nice pics Chris. I guess it's easy when you have the best scuba model in the biz ;-)

Thanks man! Yeah nothing easier than carrying a rebreather + alum 80 + alum 40 + scooter + dslr camera system, scootering out 15 minutes to 150 ffw, adjusting aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and strobe positioning in the pitch black with very limited visibility, all while the deco obligation is racking up, and then trying to take some pictures that might actually be worth looking at. But your right, its easy when you have the best scuba model in the biz. :smt064 Haha, but seriously Erik is the best scuba model in the biz hands down.
