Really dark water at Redondo today!

Post by Bric Martin »

My regular buddy is out of town for a while, so I hit Redondo today.

The water was really muddy for the first half of the dive. It opened up some as the dive continued. There were many critters out, but the highlight was the biggest grunt sculpin that I have seen. This guy was at least 3 inches long and a real bully. When any other grunts would come nearby, he would aggressively chase them off. It was a pretty funny show. The dark water made for some really peaceful dives. I think the dark makes it easier to find the critters!

Anyway, it was a great day, but I can’t wait for my buddy to get back.

It was the same yesterday. At 2 PM we basically had a night dive, and the thermocline was down at 42 feet, the deepest I've ever seen it. Viz never really opened up to more than about 8 feet, but it was a good dive anyway. I got to show a Hawaii diver the big octo under one of the boats, which made his day.

I was there yesterday around 11 or so. I stuck around for a couple of hours but the water never looked worth it and there were allot of boats dragging lead out there that were getting in uncomfortably close!

What is that next-to-last photo?

LOVE the gruntie picture. My friend Claudette has a long, complex description of them, that includes pig-snouted and Edwards Scissorhands . . . you got the scissorhands!

2nd to the last pic looks like a Roughback Sculpin beginning to develop the mating coloration on their eyes that they get when time to look sexy.
