Blakely Rock 8/17

Post by stphnmartin »

Dived China Wall and Shangri-La off Blakely Rock on Sunday. The viz was a stellar 30 feet with plenty of octos and wolf eels. The fog was dense early and made crossing the ferry and cargo ship routes a bit sketchy. But, thankfully that burned off for a beautiful day.

I tried out a quadcopter for the first time launching it from the boat. I was nervous flying it over the water but managed to get it back in one piece. The views from the air add an interesting perspective to the dive site.

Very nice... I've been meaning to get to that site. Love the roto view. I have a parts lists to make learner model, but my other projects seem to get in the way.

What a fun video! I loved the copter shots that showed how fabulous the viz was.

I wonder what that one wolf eel had been scrapping with. What eats wolf eels?

Other wolf eels-male territorial disputes.
Neat video, esp. the BR copter shots.

Great video, what make of copter did you use?

Wow! Great video!

Way to raise the video bar with the copter shots. Now everyone's videos will seem lame without the "birds-eye view". :)

Seriously, really enjoyed seeing the site from above, and would love that view from a bunch more of our dive sites!

Thanks for posting.

I used the DJI Phantom 2 Vision +. I'm still learning how to fly it well. There were seals on the rocks and I considered flying in close (if you look closely you can see some swimming underwater), but figured I'd best learn what rules there are about harassing marine life with a quadcopter first. Plus a sudden gust could knock it into the water as well when flying that low.

Nice video, loved seeing through the water.

Harassment is not well defined in terms of drones. I would expect the general rule of thumb to apply, if the marine mammal is agitated and forced to move (away) from you or your drone that's harassment.

Very nice video above and below the waves. Reminds me that I have to do more diving before the end of year. I started out with a bang then slowed to a crawl. I hate when life gets in the way of diving.
