Flagpole Update

Post by KeithBoll »

Went with Dale back to Flagpole today. Viz was really weird - the first ten feet were really clear. Then the viz shot down to 2 feet (yes - and 2 feet at most!). Then at 30 feet, it started opening back up. Even at 80 feet - the viz was okay (15 to 20 feet) - but it never fully cleared up. Even with that - some good critters to see today. Unfortunately - a very large wolf eel out in the open - looked like he was really struggling to breath. Some other wolf eels in their dens also looked stressed. The two Mama octs in their dens are still taking care of the eggs. And - we found two grunt sculpins - one in a pipe and the other out in the open. All in all - a beautiful sunny day with very calm water.

We were going to dive flagpole today, but Mikes Beach had a wedding today and they wouldnt even let us park.

Sund Rock had slightly better viz on the flood late afternoon.

To the plus side, we dove with 2 six gills
=============================================

- I got a good squirt in my mouth
- I would imagine that there would be a large amount of involuntary gagging
- I don't know about you but I'm not into swallowing it

Yes, the vis was very strange. Can never figure it out.
Here is our friendly little warbonnet and one of the healthy sun stars that seem to be making a come back.

It was real sad to see how the wolf eel was suffering

Thanks for the update! How were the grunts and warbonnets doing in the low o2?

Dale -- The red on your warbonnet really strikes a mood! Cool pic!
Keith -- I always like those s&p guys! Nice lighting!

FYI kneedeep and I went to dive flagpole last weekend and the buoys gone. We let Randy Williams know and he's going to investigate. We stayed at Mike's Beach and Mike said they'd had a wind storm. We opted out of trying too swim and find the knuckle as they didn't have a good dive map.... We dove Mike's Beach instead.

Yes, it has been gone a couple of months. It was sitting up on the beach between Mike's and the point. I turned it in too so hopefully with another report they will get it replaced.
It's still easy to find if you are familiar with the site.
