The Big Island -

Post by BillZ »

One of the main reasons I love diving is encounters with large pelagics and you can't beat the Big Island of Hawaii for affordable diving and shore access to the big stuff.

This first video is a compilation of my morning dives at Two Step, a site located in Captain Cook about 15 miles south of Kona. We stay in the area so every morning of our trip I would get up before dawn, gear up and hit the water at sunrise to catch the reef as it starts to wake up.

This clip was shot outside of Honokohau Marina just north of Kona. I was scootering along the reef when I noticed that the schools reef fish were jetting into the coral for cover, which isn't typical. I glanced behind and saw, tracking 15 feet behind me, Laverne a 14 foot resident Tiger Shark. I quickly stopped and swung the scooter around to get it between me and the shark. She made a wide arc around me and took off into the blue. Unfortunately I had to boot up my Gopro so I only got this short clip of the encounter (damn low battery).

Awesome videos! I love two-step one of my favorite dive sites in all of Hawaii.

And beautiful tiger shark. That's at the top of my must see list. :)

Wow. Video of the dolphins and the music was simply mesmerizing.

And of course the Tiger is epic!
