Alki Junkyard - Sea Spiders - 1/9/16

Post by Scubie Doo »

Met up with ScubaJess and Mpenders for some Sea Spider hunting. Holy smokes! They were everywhere. I saw 5 together in a small area, I actually stopped counting at around 25-30. Thank you ScubaJess for showing us the way :-)

And, what the heck is this. Found it in the shallows. Looks like a segmented worm of some kind. Sorry for the crappy photo.

Have a great week everyone. I will be in Portland so no ThThTh for me this week :-(

Glad you got to see them!
You got some pretty clean shots, which is tough with these. Nice job!

Great shots of the Sea Spiders!

It takes some close looking to spot these guys, something I'm not always good at.....

Thanks Eric. You hit the nail on the head. These little critters are tough. Lots of hunting for perfect focus.

Thanks Tom. These little critters were everywhere at Alki. Was difficult to find the first, kind of like finding your first lumpy :) Once you know what to look for they are easier to find.

Yep, it's a type of polychaete worm called a scaleworm, due to the rows of "scales" running down the back.

so Greg , what is it technically called ? is it a sea spider... or are we all calling this small underwater creature the wrong name... ?

Greg, thanks for the id. When I photographed it I did not know what it was. I really appreciate all your critter knowledge. Thanks again.

Sorry for the late response, just saw the question: yes, sea spider is the correct. Their relationship to terrestrial spiders is still a matter of debate, but it is a perfectly acceptable term.
