God's Pocket April 4-8

Post by YellowEye »

Howdy Folks
I just came back form another great trip to God's Pocket. A buddy of mine cancelled his spot, so I jumped on in the last minute for a deep discount :taco:

It was a great week of diving as usual, with probably 8 of the divers I've dove with previously, and some nice new folks were met as well. There were a bunch of photogs on the boat, and the whole week was focused on photo discussion, so it was a ton of fun!

Weather and tides were a bit iffy at times, so we didn't hit any of the remote spots (Hunt Rock etc), but we hit all the classics like Browning Wall, Butter Tart, Snowfall, Ruth's Rock, 7 Tree Island, etc! Epic diving!

And I got to see my first rock greenlings! :taco: :partydance:  :joshsmith: :) I've been looking for these guys ever since I first read about them on seaotter.com (now www.emeralddiving.com) over a dozen years ago. I saw 3 females on 7 tree. They were super shy! (no sitting in my hand like Jody L C had the privilege of!). I got no pics but I was very happy and can't wait to go back again this fall!

Average depth of the dives was probably less than 30'... so much to see in the shallows!

Here were some of the snaps!

Thanks! BTW for those not familiar with God's Pocket... It is a dive resort near Browning Passage, near the town of Port Hardy, which is on the northern tip of Vancouver Island. It is about a 12 hour commute from Seattle (broken up by a 2 hour ferry ride plus waiting in line for that).

It is a very isolated, beautiful area. Huge walls, tons of critters, usually great visibility. Puget sound king crab, hooded nudibranch, wolfies, tiger and china rockfish etc!

The resort itself is very comfortable and has great amenities. The owners and staff are super nice. Great food. And the boat has an elevator which scoops you out of the water effortlessly!

I forgot to mention that we also got to see some very cool stuff on the surface too... like a baby humpback, a wolf, dolphins, a bait ball with birds diving into it, harlequin ducks, humming birds, bald eagles, sea lions, etc!

Great adventures!

Nice pictures. BTW, Rock greenlings can be found in very shallow water on top of the rocks at Salt Creek.

Like you I first saw them at gods pocket. Then once I could identify them well I was surprised to see many at Salt Creek. They hang out in the grass on top of the rocks near the surface. They spook easy but always come back to the spot they were sitting on. With some patience you can get very close. They are striking!
