Salt Creek, Seiku Jetty, and Lake Crescent 5-13-2016

Post by Gdog »

Scubie Doo, Pencers, Stphn Martin and myself all manned up...some couldnt find it in themselves to (not mentioning real names, but... H2O Doc and ScubaJess), and we met at Port Gamble at 6:30 am, then completed the journey to Salt Creek for a morning splash. Jesse had calculated it correctly, and the surge and swells were manageable as was the current. We paired up and slipped thru the gap into the cold colorful water. Visibility was ok, perhaps 15', with fine particulate in the water column. Nudibranchs were in abundance, along with all the usual supects. Caught a pair of nudis in what looked like an awkward situation, so I quickly took a shot and moved on.....it seemed like an intimate moment..

We had decided to limit our bottom time to 1 hour to give ourselves time to complete 2 more dives that day. After reaching shore, and taking a few to rest, we decided to use our off gas time to travel the hour to Seiku Jetty to see if we could find some Stalk Jellies. So off we went, arriving at the Jetty to find it simply PACKED with fishermen. We still managed to find a couple spots very close to the entry, and quickly geared up. We splashed into nice almost blue water vis, into the eel grass. I looked over and it appeared Jesse was taking a few shots to make sure his camera was working properly. I noticed Penders was doing the same, so I took a couple shots of eel grass and rocks to make sure all was good. I looked around and Jesse and Mike were still working over their cameras, shooting again and again. I moved over to see what Jesse was having trouble with, and Blammo, he was taking shots of Stalk Jellies, as was Penders! I quickly joined in. They were on the eel grass swaying in the current, and it was very difficult to get focus. I managed to get a couple that are so so close to being in focus, but not quite!

We had a nice long dive, then hit the shore. What a great dive! It was starting to rain, so we made our move to hit Crescent Lake for a rinse dive. When we arrived, it was raining steadily. We geared up and braved the slippery rocks to jump into the Lake. Vis was pretty good, not as good as it can be, but it was a nice dive to rinse gear in!

Mike Penders was worried about his head getting cold after all the diving, and the rain, but he found a beanie which took care of the problem

After the diving, it was time to head home. It was an EPIC day of diving. And I mean EPIC :joshsmith: :partydance: :supz: :norris: :taco: day of diving. Maybe next time the weaker ones among us will find the courage to join in. As for me, I simply cannot wait to get back to Seiku Jetty and work on better shots of the Stalk Jellies. Thanks to Jesse, Mike, and Stephen for putting up with me!

It was a fun trip. I'm still wiped out from it. Really nice photos and also nice to get in a new dive site at the jetty. Unfortunately those jellies hang out on eel grass in the surge making them impossible to capture on video. I haven't looked at what I captured, so perhaps there's a miracle clip in there. I'll post something if possible.

George, I looked up the stalked jellies and the one that is "opened up" is a different kind. It is called a, oval-anchored Stalked Jelly. The pretty green ones are a, windowed stalked jelly or a stalked medusa.

No, plotting out where I might find one. :angelblue:

Pretty much. I didn't want to take it too far away from where I found it...in case the owner came back looking for it. It was kinda near the 10ft log that Scubie decided to relocate....NOT the 20ft log that he TRIED to relocate. :nutty:

At Salt Creek, in addition to several that you listed, I found:

1- Stubby dendronotus (thanks to Jan for the ID on YE's Keystone thread)
2- California Berthella (I know, not really a nudi - but close enough for me)
3- Some kind of Doto, not sure if it's the same you found.

At Sekiu,

1- Shaggy Mouse
2- Dendronotus diversicolor

Pics to follow shortly

Funniest part was Gdog's reaction. He didn't see me put it on, as he was too busy futzing (PC technical term) around with his camera. He looked up, saw me and almost spat out his reg...then he had to clear his mask before trying to take a pic.

Quite an adventure out to the peninsula on Saturday. Checked off a must-do dive site off "the list", and added a few new critters to my photo journal. Sleep deprivation and the loooooong drive were easily overshadowed by the great diving and even better company.

Here's some pics:

Salt Creek:
Cockerell's Dorid

I think this is a Doto. I'd welcome anyone being able to confirm or otherwise positively ID it.

I found several of these, but so tiny that I had no idea what they were at the time.

I did not recognize this as a nudibranch while underwater. After taking one pic, I actually thought it was a small anemone attached to the kelp, and moved on. Only recognized it as a shaggy mouse after I downloaded my pics.

One of our primary goals on this dive was to find a stalked jelly. Finding one would have made us happy. We found several upon dropping in, and the four of us probably stayed within a 25' circle the first 15 minutes of the dive.

Cool pics Mike!

Jesse -- do you think your juvi fish could maybe be a RIL? The fins look similar.
