Redondo Squid Dive

Post by Gdog »

Met Jesse and Mike Penders today at Redondo for a much needed dive. Last time I had dove was the first week in December, and my gills were all dried out. Jesse had arrived a couple hours early, and had just gotten out of the water after diving the south side. He said he didnt see much, so the 3 of us decided to drop down and head to the old VW. We dropped in, found vis to be quite good, paid the baby wolfie a visit, then headed north. We saw all the usual suspects, with Jesse meeting up with a very friendly red octo who wanted to play. Unfortunately for me, I had my macro 60mm lens on and couldnt get a shot. I noticed Mike's strobes going off west of me, while Jesse was inspecting a pile of squid eggs east of me. I headed over towards Mike to see what he had found. Just as I could see him, I spotted a large female squid laying on the sand, motionless. I moved in for the shot, and she took off. I managed a couple shots, and realized she had an egg and was carrying it. I followed her to an egg pile, and snapped her attaching the egg she was carrying into the pile. She then hunkered down on the sand, and came out with another egg, and headed to a different pile and deposited that egg. It was really cool to watch, i got quite a few shots of her in action. I was wishing I had a go pro or something to video it. After that, we headed back to the safety stop and then to the parking lot. It was a good dive, that was made into a fantastic dive for me with the squid action. Here are a few of the better shots;

This Nudi was very small, about the size of a penny...

I saw several of these Leopard Nudis

Thanks to Jesse and Mike for splashing with me after a long dry spell!

Dang! I guess Nick and I should have gone north instead. Very cool pictures of the squid I wish i saw that! I did in fact have my GoPro but only really saw a few tiny red octos and a stubby squid on our dive

Really cool shots gdog. Great experience! Was the egg pile to the north west of the VW? I saw one there last week.

There were two piles east of the Vw, and one west. The squid went to the two east piles.
