ThThTh 3/16

Post by stphnmartin »

Five of us braved the sunlight and blue skies for ThThTh at the 'dond. The first five feet of seawater looked like it was being pumped out of the Discovery Park sewage treatment plant. But, deeper down it cleared out to 15 feet or so.

I saw a Dungeness crab hatching eggs for the first time and got decent clips on video. The eggs are TINY! It was interesting behavior to observe how the parent simultaneously cradled the egg mass while stroking it with another pair of rear legs to help the hatchlings escape. And it used its mandibles to propel its progeny away.

Here are a few grabs from the video:

Those are some awesome shots, hard to imagine how truly tiny they are.
Keep up the fine work, as I cold water dive vicariously through the wide angle Wednesday group.

Nice find. It's a red rock crab, not a Dungeness.

Howdy folks!

Great red rock crab egg sequences!

Good diving with everybody again. We also got to meet John, a newer diver from Poulsbo, who was looking for another dive club it turned out but got mixed in with us. Good to dive with him!

Here was one of my snaps!
