Gull Rock and Sucia Island

Post by Seaslave »

It's been ages since I posted a trip report. I guess I'm feeling nostalgic...
Some buddies and I headed out Friday morning after night shift for some shrimping on the really good high slack. Since the tides were so good we figured we'd dive too!
We dropped the pots and headed over to Gull Rock. We hit the tide just right with a gentle push down the north side of the rock ending in total slack! Vis was easily 40ft but there was a lot of particulate in the water so backscatter was an issue. We pulled the pots and got a four man limit! We headed toward home and stopped at Sucia for another great dive on the north side of the island. Again, another gentle push along the wall but this time the current picked up toward the end. No problem with a good boat driver! An awesome morning shrimping and diving in the ol' backyard!!!

Very cool. I went to Sucia this weekend too. I didn't see a basket star, pskc, or a cloud sponge there though. Cool finds! Were they from Gull?

Love the San Juans!

The Basket Star and the PSKC were both at Sucia. The North and Northwest sides of the island tend to be the better dive sites for critter spotting.

While they're still a treat to see, I seem to have been running into a lot of them lately up here! We dove Skipjack Island a while back and saw three of them on a single dive!

Calvin -- if you want to see basket stars, you got to have Bill take you to Barry Island when you go to God's Pocket... It's basket star city!
