Davidson Rock ROCKS!!

Post by mattwave » Mon Aug 25, 2008 7:35 am

We had 14 divers splash at 1:30 Sunday on what many consider the premier pinnacle dive in the San Juans. Well 5 of us were on the Aluminator to dive the Black Dragon, but the weather prediction was sketchy (Wish I could be there today with them). Davidson must be made out of Fish steroids, man that dive is one not to miss. Current was non existent, vis was superb, and life was everywhere all the way to 170ffw. Thanks to Nak Nek too, all 10 divers said they had a blast. Going to have to have to dive Davidson one more time before winter.

That sounds like a great site! I'm looking forward to getting a dive in there. Hopefully, the next trip out there happens before or after my Vacation. And with the Alluminator, you could race out in the AM, catch the slack, and be back in time for lunch!

Diving. . . is an active physical form of meditation. It is so silent- You're like a thought.

SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKE SLINKIES. NOT REALLY GOOD FOR
ANYTHING, BUT THEY BRING A SMILE TO YOUR FACE WHEN PUSHED DOWN THE
STAIRS.

I really enjoyed diving Davidson Rock yesterday. Here is my quick dive report.

I definitely put it up there with one of my all time favorite dives. We pulled up to a buoy surrounded by bull kelp and were a little unsure if the current was going or not. The site is very exposed compared to most of the other site I have done in the area. Howard and I were diving 25/25 back gas and 50% for deco.

We dropped down in the kelp and got a bit tangled up on my drop. After freeing myself(with Howards help) we proceeded through the kelp as it slowly started to drop off. We descended down to 157fsw max depth. Current was minimal toward the end but for the most part a non issue. Vis was also great.

I was absolutely amazed at the amount of life to be found. Every square inch was covered in some type of organism. The anemones and the nudibranchs were the highlight for me. Also I found a huge anchor. It was about 6 feet tall and at about 145fsw. It looked like it came off a galleon or something. It was the stereotypical anchor with large flukes etc. Very cool find.

From there we circled the rock or pinnacle and started our ascent. It seemed more like an underwater island than a narrow pinnacle though. We did our gas switch at 70fsw and continued our decompression stops. At about 40fsw I blew a bag and finished our deco slightly drifting with the current. Great dive and I cant wait to do it again sometime soon. A big thank you to Pez for being our safety diver! Also thanks to Matt to putting the trip together. Its too bad we had to call the Black Dragon off but everything worked out in the end.
