Redondo 2-5-09

Post by cardiver »

What a huge turn out for our Thursday night dive! There must have been 12 people there and I think I met almost everyone.
The tide was out all the way to the end of the pier but viz was maybe 25-30 fsw. Tom and I set a course for the bottle field and found plenty of cool critters, but no psl's.......
We ended up doing a 62 minute dive and my borrowed computer (thanks Walt) showed a temp of 42 degrees. Not sure how accurate that was but it sure felt that cold.
All in all a great dive with good friends and you really can't ask for more than that.

Wow, Mind boggling! What a difference from a day dive. Awesome shots!

My buddy and I did 2 dives Wed during the day and although the tide was up but we saw very little activity both down the big rope to the bottle field and along the top rope over to the VW. Also the big octo was missing under the boat. I'm just wondering The Seattle aquarium folks were there during our first dive collecting specimins. One of the things they said they were looking for were PSL's I didn't tell them where they have been spotted lately and they were up at the upper boat where the big octo has been lately while we went down the rope. When we came back up they were pulling out of the lot and when we went back in for dive two the octo was gone.

Was he back tonight?

SaWeet patatas! I love impromptu Club dives! That is a mess 'o gunnels. I'm sure glad someone is getting their Nitrogen fix. Lynne is right, Nitrogen IS an anti-depressant! :violent1:

Perhaps a query to Roland might be in order. It IS octo-count month (have YOU been reporting?!) But I'd be surprised if the aquarium collected GPOs from such a popular site and from such a diveable depth.

RJack - can you enlighten us at all on this?

BTW - for those who know HOW they do it, let's just keep that to ourselves as not to broadcast their collection techniques to the world.

Let's see, myself, Cardiver, Bassman, Mr. & Mrs. DiverBob, Kitsapdiver, Pogiguy, ScubaScot, Zendiver2, and JackieG - plus two divers I didn't know.

Great times! I'll try and get some pics up, but Ron's give you a good idea. Alas, no Lumpsuckers. I couldn't find the jar with the screw on lid where GD has "hidden" the one he's photographing on every dive. And somebody had removed the bag he shot to mark the spot. Oh well, better luck next time.

The gunnels were fun, as were the "clouds" of Tube Snouts - to say hundreds would not be an exagerration. One buddy team saw a small skate - alas, not mine. Small octos, gunnels by the drove, Grunts, Sailfins, carpets of shrimp, several juvenile Red Irish Lords - and that was only one dive! Lots of life, lots of fun.

Thanks guys!

Awesome Thursday dives!
ScubaScott and I saw the Skate but no pictures because of the lost camera on the first dive. If anybody finds a Canon housing floating or not, between Redondo and Lesdavis let Scuba Scott know.
As Scott and I were getting out, walking the half mile of shore, a girl came up to us and said "Are you guys real scuba divers?"
Man I wish I was witty enough to come back with a quick answer like" Nope! we're just pretending!" "Here's your sign!"

Finally got some pics from this dive uploaded. They are here .

Here's a couple of them - trying not to post the same shots that Ron took...

These Cockscomb are brighter than the ones I've seen before - mating colors perhaps?

Many of the fish we saw were juveniles - including this Red Irish Lord.

Image

Is this a Shiner Perch or a Kelp Perch?

Image

And to close things out - a beautiful little Scaleyhead Sculpin.

Nice shots Tom! love that first cockscomb. It's a tough call on the perch from that angle but I think it's a shiner.

I don't think it is a kelp perch, they usually have distinct blotches of white on them.

That's interesting ... I had been in contact with someone from the Seattle Aquarium earlier last week about the PSL's. He told me they had a crew going out to the San Juan Islands this past week-end to collect some specimens ... but were there any GPO's at Redondo. Knowing it was the annual octopus count, I told him where they were. I don't imagine they'd be collecting octopus from a popular dive site, however.

I had offered to take them down to where the PSL's are ... but they declined my offer ...
