What do you make of this?

Drowning and embolism are two very different things aren't they?

Can you drown first and then have an air embolism?
I supose it would be helpfull to know more specifically where the embolism was at, heart, lungs?

I'm not willing to point a finger at a specific part of this accident, but..

What can we learn from this?

Maybe I shouldn't ask here on this public board

I was wondering where the info that it was an air embolism came from. When we first heard the story this morning it was said that the powers that be were still waiting for an autopsy. Mentioning a source would be a good thing for the news folks to do along about now.

Really tragic. I have to say: you guys that were there and did all the right stuff really deserve a hat's off. It's takes a lot to keep your head when things go non-linear. You all did great from what I read.

That was a tragedy and an example of human caring and capability at the same time. To all that helped I extend my best regards and admiration for a job well done. To the family and friends of the lost diver, my sincere condolences on your loss.

That's a cause of death, but still not really an explanation.

Could be:

- bolted from the bottom due to non-medical issues and embolised
- bolted from the bottom due a life threatening medical issue and embolised
- medical issue + embolised on the ascent with the rescuer
- embolised due to CPR

Probably others as well. Definitely difficult for the ME to tell if the embolism was an nearly inevitable consequence of the prior events in the accident chain, or if the embolism was the proximate cause of the accident.

this gives me all the more reason to take that Rescue course! I want it to become automatic if I ever come across a diver in trouble.....

What I liked about Rescue diver course is learning the ability to "Stop,Breath Think and then React"
Also, it teaches you to do the necessary "self rescue" techniques that are useful in any situation.

The rescue course is ten times worth the cost of the course!

At least,for me, it was.

Well put, Blacktoe....and great advice. This is one of the good reasons to discuss an incident like this. It is so tragic and unfortunate that this has happened; however, we all need to learn everything we can from it so this tragedy does not go in vain. Constructive input like this is vital to that end.

I stated earlier that the wife and I were there, and had literally just left...as in had to have been driving past Saltys when the calls from the water came. We watched all the divers talking earlier in the parking lot, but for some reason kept our distance. I regret not engaging the other divers, the members of this dive community. I lost the chance to talk with someone who was not coming back, to talk to the divers who put it on the line to help someone else; and the chance to get to know some truly great human beings. I am proud of the way you conducted yourselves, and the dive community. So...next time there is a bunch of divers hanging out, I will be gettin to know you all.

Today is the one year anniversary of the passage of my Native American brother Karl to the spirit world.

I remember him often.

Thanks a ton for posting the story link. It sure makes this story even more personal for me. Not only did it have an impact from the perspective of helping one of those involved in the rescue/recovery shortly after it happened, but, now it has a personal impact on me after watching the KIRO story.

It turns out that the victim in this story was the father of a student at my school. The drum group has performed several times at my school, including a full-on Pow-Wow 2 years ago. I have had the pleasure of seeing the growth and passion that the story talks about. The kid talking at the end is the student at my school. He went from playing just a part role to being the lead, as is the tradition in passing the responsibility on to the younger generation.

This is a great time to reflect on the things we have in life and the importance of family.
