Dive and BBQ with GUE-Seattle at Keystone, 8/25

Post by LCF »

Come join us for a day of food and underwater frolic at Keystone! Tides should be good, with a long flood in the morning, and flat tides in the afternoon -- I've checked with Laurel la Fever, who gave us the go. Keystone's a wonderful place for a BBQ if the weather is good; if the weather isn't good, we'll bring up Easy-Ups and make our own good weather! BBQ meat and soft drinks will be courtesy GUE-Seattle; if you are vegetarian or need something special, feel free to bring it.

Please either post here or on the NWUE page on FB, so we have some idea of how many people are coming. We'd hate to run short on food!

If you haven't dived Keystone, it's one of the premier shore dives in the Sound. It has beautiful structure, kelp, rockfish, and TONS of little things. Look at Jan Kocian's long running "Whidbey Island Critters" thread to see the kinds of things that you can find at Keystone!

Last year we had an AWESOME time!! We had the best charcaol BBQ put up by GrillMaster Phil too! all in all it was a fantastic day of diving and socializing.

Never seen so many rock fish in my life! They were just sitting there and you'd float on through them..Absolutely magical dive :angelblue:

here's a couple of videos from both the Jetty and pilings dive from the GUE Seattle sponsored dive at Key Stone last year.

Pilings Dive - Courtesy: Dan Bachmeier
(Have a look at 4min 30sec into the video, I'm floating through hundreds of rock fish :luv: )

Going to try to make it if I can. Eliseaboo introduced the keystone site to me in February and it was awesome. My video masterpiece is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZE89yLlLKE if it helps excite others :partydance:

Anyone want to dive Sunday also just a little farther north? I have a empty family house in Anacortes I'll crash at so I can do a boat dive in the San Juans on Sunday. Divemaster Bruce Brown is organizing a trip on the Lu-Jac's Quest (http://www.lujacsquest.com) for $90 which includes food/snacks. Be fun to have another dive buddy or two. If a blocking issue is a place to crash in Anacortes let me know. I added a seperate post for the boat dive so I don't randomize the Keystone thread: http://www.nwdiveclub.com/viewtopic.php?t=18988

Everyone should also reminded that this is a National Park, so you need a "Parks Pass".. They can be acquired from the Ranger when you get there for $10.

State Park and the Discover Pass is required. I don't remember a ranger being consistently present to sell passes at Keystone but there might be a pay station there. You can also buy a pass at any place that sells Hunting/Fishing licenses (sporting goods stores, Tackle Shops, Fred Meyer, etc.).

Both times I was there last year, the Ranger came around and sold us passes..

But you are right, they might have a pay station too?

technically, you park without a disco pass, and they can cite you for it. They are under no obligation to sell you a pass instead of a citation. But if they have a pay station ur golden.

I was diving last October and the kind ranger came along and was about to write me a ticket when another dive buddy talked him out of it as long as I came up to the office and bought one as soon as my gear was packed up. Close call there. I believe they do have a pay station by the boat ramp for day use.

They do have a pay station as far as I remember, and they have not been so kind lately on waiving citations (at least here at Fort Worden). The grace period is more or less over, so make sure you pay!

Hmm...we'll see if I am able to make it or not. Last night I was unable to make a reservation on the PT ferry, and it's usually a zoo down there. Getting back will be the real trick I think :-/

GREAT Turn out today for the BBQ!!

We had a few awesome dives and tons of support from NWDC'ers! Thank you!

Thanks a lot to all y'all for coming out and making it a success. Next year we will beat the 30 divers record! (I think theres like 4 or 5 people missing form the picture below)

And YES, Sounder was there and I can confirm he DID dive! :penelope:

With so many divers at Keystone, I thought I will have chance to try my new fisheye lens
to include divers in the sun beams under the old wharf. To my surprise, when I arrived there,
I found two divers leaving the Pilings and managed to snap just two pictures, nowhere
close to the pilings and the sun beams. The schools of Black rockfish were absent too.
It was just me and a lonely Copper rockfish :(
Back on shore, I did attest that Lynne's cookies were delicious ! :)
