Redondo 06-08-2007, pics and report

Post by Tom Nic »

Had a nice dive yesterday with Jay (LostinBrownsmead) at Redondo. Thanks Jay! :prayer: Viz opened up to about 10' once you dropped below 45 fsw or so, so it was nice in that regard, at least if you went a bit deeper.

Some pictures are here.

Jay was diving his doubles, and only had enough air for one good dive, which turned out OK because my valve leaking problems continued. #-o (Hopefully I've got it fixed for Saturday!) We met Amy (Pinkpadigal), a student, and a divemaster in training. It was great to see them and the enthusiasm of a diver with 5 dives who loves it! \:D/ Even with it being only one dive I did spot 2 critters I've never seen before (See below - Snake Prickleback and Freckled Dorid) and a couple I've only seen once (Blackbelly Eelpout & Roughback Sculpin) and the BIGgest Stubby Squid I've ever seen! :supz:

Jay spotted a BIG stubby squid, the biggest I've ever seen anyway, even allowing for water magnification it was between baseball and softball size.

I think this is a Roughback sculpin. I'm not sure whether there's stuff floating in the water or whether it's a bad pic, but he looks "dirty"?!

His eyes also look "milkier" than the photos in my books... don't know what if anything is up with that.

We saw the usual Young of Year Brown and Copper Rockfish. It's nice to see life growing!

Found a cute little Grunt Sculpin that seemed shyer than usual. He kept "skipping" off when he got tired of having his picture taken, ending up with a little cloud of silt around him each time. Any dive you see a Grunt is a good dive!

We also saw a Blackbelly Eelpout that just wouldn't hold still for a picture. This is all I could manage.

I also saw my first Snake Prickleback! Unfortunately he was also very shy and I could only snap this shot of him hastily beating a retreat. The photo is pretty bad... I only post it because I've never seen one before.

This Freckled Dorid was a nudi that I've never seen before.

All in all, a great dive, and enough to keep me coming back for more!! :rr:
