Review, New Book, "Shore Diving Near Seattle"

Post by Pinkpadigal »

I just received my copy and read Ken Wallner and Sons new book, "Shore Diving Near Seattle". I rate it very high and recommend it to anyone for their library.

This book is an excellent resource and guide for the newcomer to shore diving in Puget Sound. It spends the first 1/2 of the book on how to shore dive, what to expect with visibility, basics for photography in the Sound, how to read tides and even how to pack your car.

This book is PERFECT guide for a new diver!

The book goes on to evaluate and review 11 popular dive sites in Puget Sound, from Mukilteo to Titlow. There are great photos, maps/driving directions and even restaurants that are close by. He even goes into where to park and how to find all the underwater lines.

I talked to Kent and he and his sons are working on additional dive sites to add to later additions.

This book retails for $26.95. You can order it through Pathway book service, or most of us dive shops will have them for sale.

I haven't been able to find anything out about this book on the internet. I have tried to search by title, author and publisher. The closest I got was a pathwaybook.com website that returned a Network Timedout error. Is it me or the website?

When I first saw this thread, my reaction was, "Why do we need another shore diving book?"

Yesterday, I had a chance to look at this one at Bubbles, and I changed my tune. Honestly, I think the cost of this book should be bundled into the price of every OW cert here, and this book should be handed out to all new Puget Sound divers. It covers only the most usual sites, but it covers them THOROUGHLY, with photographs and diagrams to help you navigate the site. There are a lot of pictures of the sites from underwater, and although some of the critter IDs are wrong, they're still good pictures.

This is the book you want if you've just finished your cert, and you and your buddy want to go out and dive Edmonds, or Alki, or the Pipeline, or any of the other mainstream novice sites around here. Bless the author for making this resource!

IMHO Northwest Shore Dives by Stephen Fischnaller is a much better book. It's also difficult to find but I checked and you can pick up the 2000 edition off from Amazon.

If anyone knows Dr. Wallner or sons, please let them know that there is still interest in their book. It would be wonderful if they would re-publish it as an ebook (or just a free PDF).

I think the Fischnaller book is far more expansive, but it is not as clearly oriented to the absolute novice diver.

Krys, I think you may be beyond this one already.

Is the 3rd edition (published in 2000) the most recent version of the Fischnaller book?
