Outbox vs Sent Messages in Private Messages: Difference?

What is the difference between a Sent Message and one in my Outbox? Thanks for any help.

messages that are sitting in your Outbox are ones that haven't been read yet. once the recipient reads them, they are transferred to your Sent box.
