Boating - What not to do...

Post by PeninsulaDiver »

...with a very expensive boat!

We almost had a new wreck at a great dive site.

The incident happened this weekend just outside Port Ludlow on Klas Rock. The photo was sent to me by a friend who assisted the vessel. It was hauled off at high tide yesterday. It took 4 boats to do the work. I think King5 has video of it as well. It's not uncommon for skippers who don't pay attention to run aground on this rock.

WOW! How much damage to the boat, I wonder?

So is it safe to assume the original incident happened at high tide? Cause that's a pretty big rock . . .

They reported no significant damage to prop and shaft before they pulled her off. Sounds like there was some keel damage so I am guessing it's either on the hard or on its way.

Fun dive site, that rock at high tide is iffy. I remember anchoring on that rock and having maybe three feet of water under my keel.

Glad no one was hurt.

Heh, I remember seeing a dive charter boat in the San Juans in a similar position.

Ouch. Why are reminders to be cognizant of ones situation always so expensive?

You need to remember "Green on right good going to sea" and "red on right on returning from sea" and you can usually avoid that kind of a thing.

That took me right back to Nav Rules class! I don't know how many times I heard "red on right returning"

That's funny! When I teach the class, I always used, "Timid Virgins Make Dull Companions at Weddings" to make it easier for my students to remember.

For those that are wondering, it's a mnemonic for correcting a magnetic compass:

True Variation Magnetic Deviation Compass add West

Timid The true heading from the chart (where 0 degrees is the true north pole)

Virgins The magnetic variation that applies in the area where you are

Make The magnetic heading (after you have adjusted for variation)

Dull The compass deviation that applies to the magnetic heading

Companions The actual compass heading you will have to steer

at Weddings ADD Westerly corrections

for the Captian of that boat, that's one heck of a painful lesson in how not to navigate.

That looks like it would have been a good opportunity time to refresh the bottom paint.

That will happen when they permanently fix the bottom damage. I laugh when ever I see that. Every year we can always count on someone getting that set of rocks or the ones just outside of Friday Harbor. I love to wake up in the morning to that out a Sucia Island when someone drags anchor and wakes up high and dry. Or they were assholes when they came into the harbor rolling everyone and their anchor wound up on the swim step. :angelblue:

I didn't photoshop this photo, I think it was hard to miss the buoy. Maybe the captain didn't know about red right returning...
