Hip Surgery - Wish me luck!!!!

Post by John Rawlings »

Those of you that have dived with me over the years know that I have been struggling more and more with severe deterioration of my right hip. It was literally torn to pieces years ago back when I was in the Army, and as I've gotten older the arthritis that developed has finally become unbearable. My last week-long dive trip to Browning Pass in early October resulted in me only making the sum total of FOUR dives the entire week....which really sucked! Since then I have spent most of my time on a cane. :rawlings:

Tomorrow morning, Wednesday, November 30th, I will be having total replacement surgery of my right hip at Virginia Mason in Seattle. I'm hoping that the surgery will be successful and that I will be able to return to diving around February or so.

Please join me in my hopes for full success!!!!

John

Best of luck John!!!! From talking to numerous patients, i suspect you will be amazed at how wonderful this surgery is, and wonder why you waited.. I know that many of the orthopedic surgeons i work with feel it's the most rewarding surgery they do with regards to near immediate, and life changing (for the good) results :)

and if its any bit of reassurance, when i was climbing a lot at vertical world, there was this guy who used to scurry up the climbing walls better than most young folks, his name being Tom Hornbein (yes, the one from the books) and the proud owner of a pair of replaced hips. He may not be climbing everest or K2 these days but i hear he still gets out on nice bushwhacks and scrambles :)

I'm not sure you'll be as recognizable at the beach without your limp... will have to come up with new distinguishing feature to remember you by ;) (just kidding)

Lucy and i will be sending you positive surgery thoughts!

hugs!

John: Although this may have become a routine procedure, in my mind routine surgery is something that happens to someone else. I feel confident that you will come through this remarkably and I am looking forward to our having a dive together when you come back as the bionic diver.
My prayers are with you.

My mother in law just had a total hip replacement 2 weeks ago at 90yo. She's doing great and I'm sure you'll be amazed how your new joint works pain free too :partydance:

John, best wishes for a speedy recovery. You'll rock the rehab, no doubt. I do know one person, quite young, who has had a hip replacement. His recovery has been amazing, and the end result -- he, like most, regrets waiting so long! He's a diver and was back in the water and loving it before long.

Let me know when the Return to the Water party is, and I'll bring some goodies. :)

Good luck to you John. My sister just had that 10 days ago and she was finally up and around at Thanksgiving. But she was a bit off with the pain.

Well, one of the biggest determinants of success on this kind of operation is the level of motivation of the patient, so I predict superb results!
