we used to put a small piece of florescent tape (or paint) on the front, cuz those little vc tards would crawl through the wire, and turn claymores around on us.

On the other hand, claymores were great for getting enough C4 to heat up C rats instead of those stupid heat tabs.

Oh the good old days... where men were men, and ears were to be collected.

Sitting here recovering from a good day in the gym. Actually rode a bike today and carried 50# across the room. So, now I'm sore and and temporarily stuck on the sofa so waded through all the pages of this thread. Lots of chatter.

Backstop wasn't part of the chatter. It would be a real tragedy to lawfully stop the bad guy by shooting only to have the round penetrate and injure or kill someone down the street. No discussion about the lawful use of a firearm for self-defense is complete without considering where the round goes after you shoot.

Sorry for the attempted break in. I know how you feel. Just be happy it wasn't a bear. He'd of made a real mess.

I've always liked lower velocity rounds. I guess this stems from carrying a 1911 for quite a while.
Now I use 115 grain Glaser safety slugs that only penetrate about six inches, give or take....

I like the 1911 too and that ammo choice is good and is defensible during the after action second guessing. Because we can carry, open or concealed, most places and I didn't feel like changing loads between uses I've pretty well gone to a shotgun for the house. 12GA with 20" barrel and 00 or 000 to take care of the midnight suddenly awake shakes does the job. But, what is important is that a person is comfortable with whatever they use.

My old remington 870 I had when I was operational, sits next to my bed, 1st round 000, next 6 are 00, last round is a BRI 570g sabot. Those 570g slugs are just nasty.

And doubles as a hammer when empty.

But mans man big caliber pistol is the version of the judge that will fire a 454 casul round

The "hand cannon" arms race got plain stupid some years back. I love my 357, and I can even sort of see how a 44 might make sense for someone. But even a 44 starts to feel a lot like slamming your hand in a car door after.a few rounds. I'd rather just go get a rifle or a shotgun if more firepower is called for.

I hear the trumpet for big callbers. When I was required to fire at least a box a week and often shot every day I could handle the big guns. But, less than that and it is indeed a rare person who can handle anything larger than a 357 or 45ACP. Most can't even handle that.

In a self-defense surprise situation I believe the odds are overwhelming the first shot with a handgun loaded with single projectile ammo will be a miss. So, regaining control and getting that second shot on target Quickly is very important. That takes practice and a low enough recoil weapon not to take the weapon very far off target. That is one of the reasons many people have gone to .40 cal or even 9mm. Or, to the shotgun pistols like the Judge.

The miss is also another reason for shot shells. Single projectiles that miss the target, including shotgun slugs, have a terrible habit of going way downrange and creating friendly fire caualties. Not a good thing to maintain good relations with the neighbors.
