Holy Sh!t ...

Sometime today ... dunno if it was at work or at the gym this morning ... someone broke into my car and stole both of my save-a-dive kits and my DAN O2 kit ... along with some equipment I'd tossed in the car this morning for this evening's class. Odd thing is, the car was locked the whole time I wasn't in it ... and whoever broke in locked it back when they were done. I didn't even notice it was missing until I got home and opened up the back to load the rest of my stuff for class.

I figure between the tools, spare regs, dive lights, mask, hood, gloves, weights, and other sundries I had in those two boxes, I'm out about $4-5K worth of gear. Don't even know how to inventory everything I had in there.

Was supposed to have a class tonight, and leaving for a trip early Friday morning ... not good.

Oh well ... now to figure out how to start replacing all that stuff ...

Could you send descriptions to the local shops, and maybe the online boards? Customized scuba gear is relatively unique, and divers are a small community. Maybe something will pop up on craigs list.

One can only hope for some karmic payback for some asshole like that.

But given they professionally got into your vehicle, its likely someone that knew the gear was there.

OTOH, its hard to sell, so likely a diver that will actually use it, not someone going to sell it.

Only thing identifiable would be the case for the DAN O2 kit ... it's got my name and phone number on it in Sharpie. About the only other thing that might be noticeable would be the Photon Torpedo ... not many of those around.

Ah well ... just got off the phone with my homeowner's insurance. Not sure that'll do any good ... they want receipts for everything ... damned if I know what happened to those, but most of 'em are probably years gone.

Just gonna have to make it up as I can and move on, I guess.

Me too ... all things considered, it could've been way worse. Been making an inventory and realized the bastards got my Terkel spool ... the one that Terkel engraved "Grateful Diver" into.

Oh well ... it served me well for several years ... and everything's replaceable.

I had a rental car once that got into using the key becuase the keyless entry wasn't working. Only when I got into the rental car, I realized it wasn't my rental, but an identical Explorer... After that I made sure I used the alarm in the big city.

Thanks to those of you who have offered gear. I'm OK in that department ... except for the O2 kit, I have spares and backups of everything essential for diving. What's going to be difficult to replace is all the handy little save-a-dive things I've accumulated over the past 10 years. A lot of that stuff was things I pull out whenever a student forgets something ... and almost all my 1# and 2# weights were in there because I use them for weight checks often. I'll have to replace those ... including both sets of ankle weights I use for trimming students.

But it's all replaceable ... I'm just gonna have to teach a few extra classes to be able to pay for it.

Lessons learned ... may be closing the barn door after the horse gets out, but all the dive stickers are now off my car. And the next box I put in there is gonna be too big and heavy to get out without considerable effort ... and it's gonna have a lock on it ... and maybe a cable lock to the front seat.

I'm already in the process of making a list of items I'm gonna need right away ... I see a large order from ScubaTools in the near future ...

Also kinda after the fact but even if you dont have receipts a lot of times having pics of the stuff you own can be very helpful with insurance. I know you might have a way to do pic
