Help with data recovery

Post by Jan K »

Just returned from dive trip and 169 photos I took are missing on the SD card.
The photos from previous three dives are there, but images from numbers 9758 to 9927 are missing.
Then the pictures appear normal again. I did not reformat, I saw the images after I took them. The numbers are missing on the San Disk SDHC 16GB card. There was plenty of memory left. Do the recovery software programs offere on line actually work ? Which one is the best ? I would really appreciate some help...

I had a problem with an SD card where it wanted me to format it to use it in anything, but I still had photos on the card. So I reluctantly formatted and used something called File Scavenger, which recovered all the photos I wanted and more. Usually the files are still there somewhere. I figured at that point, what did I really have to lose...I'd either recover them or not be able to use the card...

Maybe one of those programs could find the files before you delete anything? The pathways probably got mixed up along the way somewhere, hopefully the data is still there. Did you try it in another computer, or a different card reader?

Card Rescue.
Since I don't know much about computers, I settled for the first one I googled
Free trial download, when I saw the missing pictures, I clicked "Buy now" ( it was the only way to save them to my hard drive.
Forty dollars.

Whew! Glad you recovered it. I had happened to me once, and I paid big bucks to have it looked at by a professional with no success. Then, I turned into just searching for free recovery softwares on the web, downloaded one, and was able to recover everything.
When was the last time you did something for the first time?

Maybe if I spent more time searching, I would find something cheaper and maybe free, but I was happy
to recover the forty minutes I spent underwater so one dollar a minute is the price of that dive :)
Of course, the recovered pictures are probably not worth the money

$40 isn't all that bad for such a program. A year ago when I was trying to recover some hard drive stuff, the cheapest program was about $70.

I've played with Recova by piriform, which is free. It shows lots of data on the hdd, but I haven't ACTUALLY used it to recover anything yet.

Jan,

THANK YOU! I had the same issue and even reformatted my SD card. The program found some photos I could not find on my card. The four waterfall photos (and many others of my boys) were saved. I am very happy I saw this.
