What a ride! or why we don't dive Northern Oregon

Post by Dusty2 »

This video shows commercial fishing boats re-entering over the bar at the mouth of the Columbia River between Western Washington and Oregon . It is well known as one of the world's most dangerous and violent river re-entry points. Imagine old sailing ships doing this, quite a ride indeed!

That is incredible. I have no idea why they didn't sink while we were watching!

Actually, the boats in the video are entering the Grey River in New Zealand, during a strong ebb tide. Most of the harbors and bays along the Oregon Coast have similar bars and can get just as bad. The entrance to the Columbia River is in a class all by itself and has sank hudreds of ships.

Correct me if I am wrong... but isn't that why the Coast Guard trains in the Columbia?
The ocean is a lousy teacher. First you get a test, then the lesson.

Hence, it's called the "Graveyard of the Pacific".

Columbia river bar...Not a fan!!
I worked for a tug and barge outfit that ran WWII era YTB's that were cobbled together and scared into running. As we would be coming through that any number of the shortcut's the owner had taken would be flashing through my mind. Because you knew if just one of them came apart on us, it was going to be a really bad day. The whole time the barge would be bobbing around behind us looking like a noah's ark.
