360 + Youtuber + iPhone
360 + Youtuber + iPhone
It's here! It's HERE!
Grab your cardboard or Homido viewer, head over to YouTube take a looksie.... This is the future my friends! There will even be some Puget Sound 360 video at the upcoming SIFFx film festival playing on the Laser Dome at the Pacific Science Center in a couple weeks - just the junkyard, and not nearly as brilliant as Taiwan, but it's a start!

As an armchair diver, I'm looking forward to the time some of you start posting your videos using this technology.

I gotta confess, I don't know what I'm looking at!

Click on the video, then use the controls in the upper left to move the view around. Probably doesn't work on mobile, but I haven't tried.stphnmartin wrote:I gotta confess, I don't know what I'm looking at!
Edit: Totally works on mobile, too. That's awesome.

Here's a bit of oddness for you: when I watch the movie from a mobile browser (using the Safari plugin), it renders weird and none of the controls work. However, opening it in the YouTube app makes everything work perfectly.
Re: 360 + Youtuber + iPhone
Safari does not run 360 videos as of yet, so yes, as you found, needs to be viewed in Youtube

Doesn't work for me in Chrome on a PeeCee. Tried Firefox and it worked barely, but stuttered and stumbled around before crashing the browser. Was trying to view on youtube.com. Will try on my mac later.

I guess I should have read the headline to the thread. The iPhone part didn't register!

Do you need special glasses (or meds) to watch these?

Technically no, just an iPhone/android and youtube app, or a computer and a web browser that supports 360 video (chrome or firefox, but not Safari at this juncture). As of yet i'm not super blown away by the user experience with Google cardboard, Homido, or other SBS (Side by Side) viewing options but I can for sure see the potential that the technology offers with regards to being able to immerse the viewer in the undersea world.
I believe that as it improves it will be a stunning opportunity for growing awareness of the issues (good and bad) that Puget Sound faces. Historically the disconnect for Puget Sound is that it is not warm, in fact, the water is rather cold and a deterrent for people who are not "like us", and therefor they don't actively play in it, they play ON it.
As we all know, the visuals above water are often much rosier than the visuals beneath the thin green line. I'm hoping that as the tech matures and the cameras->stitching->finish product become less of an onerous process that more and more good 360 video will become available we can connect more non-divers to the underwater experience, and a byproduct of that connection being that they become more invested in protecting/preserving our oceans in general.
