Poor Eels
Re: Poor Eels
Those were slime eels, also know as hagfish. Hard to believe there's actually a fishery for them, but apparently there's a demand in Korea. As to your other question, I know of spearos and anglers who've taken wolf eels but they're not a species anyone goes out of their way for. One comment I heard was that they yield a really long fillet

Wolf eels are not legal to take anywhere in Washington.

Re: Poor Eels
Several years ago there was an incident of a Korean ship coming into Barkley Sound and using divers to poach several hundred wolf eels. This was back when Dave and Renate still owned Rendezvous, so it would've been prior to 2004. The ship was confiscated, but the people on board had by then killed a bunch of wolf eels.
Apparently there is a market for them ...

For the record, I live in Oregon- they're legal down here, but not commonly taken.
