Antarctic Artists and Writers Program

Post by 60south »

As some NWDC members know, I have a long association with the US Antarctic Program (USAP). Something that comes up almost every year is a National Science Foundation (NSF) solicitation for artists and writers. It's highly competitive, and applicants should be able to show a body of public work that demonstrates their commitment to the arts -- and be able to put the NSF/USAP in a good light, especially the science being conducted.

The appointment is typically for one season only, and not salaried. However, the NSF pays for all transportation and lodging costs -- and you get the grand tour of Antarctica! I would apply myself if I had any chance of being accepted.

What you may not know is that there are usually quite a few science projects occurring 'on the Ice' every year that involve scuba diving. If you are an underwater photographer with a history of public outreach, scientific curiosity, and exceptional diving skills, this may be a thing for you! (*Ahem*: ljjames)

Anyway, here's the link:

If you get serious about applying, PM me and I can offer some tips to boost your chances. And if you happen to need an assistant... :)

If you need inspiration - check out Norbert Wu's work... crossed paths with him down at Palmer about ten years ago when he was filming on an NSF grant. Antarctica underwater (and up top) is one of the most amazing places left on the planet. The diving is incredible, too :)
There are no stupid questions, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots...
