November whales

Post by oldsalt »

I went whale watching from Victoria. We first went across Haro Strait, finding a couple of Orca near Lime Kiln Lighthouse.

They were being followed by researchers gathering their scat to monitor their diet and general health. I wondered how you convince a killer whale to provide a stool sample, but they have a poop sniffing dog to lead the way. Really.

We then went to the Strait of Juan de Fuca, near Race Rocks, and found ourselves surrounded by humpback whales.

A mother with a calf appeared. I posted mother/calf pictures from Hawaii, but this calf has grown much larger, almost as big as mom.

Since we were so close to Race Rocks, we cruised by to look at the sea lions.

No whale report can conclude without a fluke picture.
