Whales and Boats

Post by oldsalt »

Even though the law tells boaters to give a wide berth to whales, the whales don't always make it possible. Here are several instances I have seen this week while watching whales from home.

These kayakers decided to watch the whale when it came close by.

Then the whale turned toward them.

The whale dives under them and comes up on the other side.

The paddlers seemed to have had enough and headed toward shore. The whale turned and followed them. Funny animals.
Early this morning, this beautiful pilothouse sailboat motored in. I doubt that the captain ever noticed the whale at his side.

Any boater who has spent much time on the Salish Sea has been surprised by a surfacing whale.

Nice. Much harder to be surprised when there are 20 whale watching boats flitting about. Even then we've had to stop and wait for them to pass.
