Saw that this morning.

Sickening if it's true. I've seen way to many of these things reported in the media turn out to be sensationalized. The fact that the King5 story has "Seal Killed" in the headline, yet there's no proof that the seal was actually killed says something.

Hopefully the seal survived the incident.

Stupid thing to do ... and, to be honest, I think if they chose to they could easily ID this fellow and take whatever action is appropriate under the circumstances.

I don't think the "native American" angle is worthwhile, though ... you can't collectively blame the tribe for the actions of one individual. Same applies for the five fellows who went whale hunting a few weeks back.

I know that commercial fishermen often view predators as "competition" for resources, and behave accordingly ...

While I hope that the proper authorities do investigate the incident, I hestitate to assume the worst at this point.

I was on a fishing boat where a bird (don't remeber what kind) got tangled in the gear. The deckhands did a commendable job of getting it loose, trying not to harm it, but it still wound up smacking around the deck a bit while they were trying to get it loose.

I am still hoping that is the case here, and the bystanders on shore mistook it for the fisherman mistreating the animal. I can't imagine the seal being very happy about the whole situation.

Ah yes ... the new Junior ... =D>

One of the advantages of doing the Rescue class in such wonderful vis was being able to watch that little fellow's mom cavorting around while we were trying to do our skills ... at one point I thought she was trying to join the class ...

Very cute....that was awesome that Mom came to visit and Junior got to sit out with us for a while.

I too hope the other kid is okay.

I'm not surprised the bystanders claimed the seal was killed by the fisherman. Although based on the pics he may or may not have played much of an active role. Its quite likely the seal drowned before the net was even pulled from the water. And he just detangled the seal and threw it back - which was the correct action since possession of the seal carcass would be illegal.

Yeah, maybe. The pictures looked to be of a live seal, though. Witnesses stated they thought it was alive...
