Big boat versus little boat

Post by dsteding »

I'm in my office, which looks out over Elliott Bay. About 10 minutes ago, there was a good racket in the form of ship horns.

I looked out, a big container ship is roped up to two tugs in front of the waterfront, heading towards the East Waterway. A very small sailboat has just motored out of the Port of Seattle's marina on the waterfront. Right into the path of the ship.

Lemme see if I can illustrate:

3 \ (skipper of small boat goes into the cabin to change his shorts)
2 \
1 <- BIG A$$ SHIP \
0 _______________\
1 \ (horns blaring--boat makes a hard turn to starboard)
2 \
3 \
4 \
5 \
(sailboat leaves marina-line is sailboat's track--sailboat is motoring, not under sail)

Fun to watch. Carnage barely averted.

[edit, dammit, the software takes out my spacing--oh well, you get the picture).

Sounds familiar! I'm sure those big boats are much more visible during the day!

Number #1 rule. Tonnage wins no matter what the rule. Even if the sailboat was under sail it did not have the right-of-way. And since he was using his engine it is just another power boat which would not of given him the right-of-way either. And since you don't need a license to operate a recreational vessel. Common sense should factor in rule #1. Who needs reality TV shows with that kind of entertainment. Now Doug, GET BACK TO WORK!! :bored:

As long as I get to be the big boat. It just works better that way anyway. Last time, I got my head stuck in the wrought iron fence and when the firemen came to cut me free, my dog ran away. There's nothing worse, then watching the cops take shots at your dog as it's running away........Here skipper, skiiiipppperrrrrr, here boy!
