What do you do when you can't dive?

Post by CalgaryDF »

Unfortunately I have gotten an ear infection from the last time I was diving, and have been waiting for it to heal. It is taking longer than expected though and I have started to get a little restless about getting back in the water. I need some sort of diving related activities to keep me interested, any ideas?

Yeah, keep diving right here on this board.
There are alot of great dive reports and an endless amount of humor to be found.
I was out for three months and this board helped me stay scuba focused.
Another good thing to do is, to show up at a dive, as Shore support and get some of the dive reports first hand, as the divers get out of thier gear. Dwashbur has been doing some of that. It's always a good feeling if there is someone at the surface, chasing away car burgulars(sp?) or just being there, to help with gear problems.

Just a few Ideas :bye:

Do you own the PADI Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving, or Mark Powell's Deco for Divers? Both are EXCELLENT educational resources. As much as I hate the patronizing tone of the PADI book, it's chock full of good information. And Powell's book should be required reading for all of us, I think.

I've been meaning to look at the PADI book, perhaps I'll go and try to track it down.

Have you read shadow divers? If not I suggest checking it out. It's a fascinating book and you can get a copy cheap on amazon

Well for me the thing that keeps me from diving usually is my lower back. When it goes out I usually spend two weeks either walking funny or crawling around my house on my hands and knees. There usually is alot of cursing  and me making promises to loose weight which when my back feels better seem to get forgotten. I try to tell myself that carrying around an extra 50lbs is equal to a full HP130. Yes I argue with myself alot. :chrisnjoe:

Easy, roughly 0.1-0.25 cfm. To manage this, zip yourself into your drysuit. BE SURE TO CLOSE THE EXHAUST VAlVE! When the suit begins to swell, politely step outside and vent. Re-close the valve and rejoin civilized company. Repeat as necessary.

Sounds like a great time to do a really good gear cleaning. Go through your save a dive kit. Wax someones scubulance. The list goes on.

How long till ya can dive again?

I have a few items you can try. If your interested.

To keep you ears dry and warm.

If the mask didn't work. this thing dries your ear canal out very well.

Something diving related to do when you can't dive....

I usually end up making a new piece of gear or modifying an existing one.
So I recommend "The Divelight Companion" from Airspeed Press. Then hang out on Candelpowerforums.com for a while and go build a 10w LED canister light. That will keep you occupied for a while. If you are looking for something that is not so hands-on I'd take one or more of the UTD online classes.

Here's something a bit more constructive.....I've yet to find the time to do this.........

Buy finger spool and tie knots in the line from the top down indicating 10' 20' 30' and 40' depths. 1 knot =10' 2 knots= 20' and so on.

You can get a reel and do the same thing.

Practice photography topside which will improve your ability below the surface.

Buy a Deco bottle and label it properly. Or loan it out to someone willing to do it for you!

Lay on the living room floor and practice your frog kick.

What I've been doing:

Shore support for someone else

Hang out here and answer questions if you can; I like a good critter ID question bestest.

Xbox 360 with some good violent games, 'cuz both the fact that I can't dive and the circumstances that brought the situation about really make me want to kill something!

Find creative ways to exasperate your children, if you have any

Train a new puppy (full-time job!)

Sit around and grumble (also a full-time job!)

I agree with Airsix, if you have the aptitude, dry time is time for gear creation, or improvements. 2 winters ago an ear infection led to vast improvements in divelight quality.

Well I have been amusing my newly graduated physician spouse with the opportunity to peer into my ears on a regular basis as my infection resolves. Appearntly unlike little kids I don't cry and squirm. Didn't occur to me that DAN insurance probably would have covered an office visit and antibiotics until I was mostly better. Thinking about hitting the water soon after about 5 weeks (and all of the remaining Ling season plus crabbing opening). I have been cyber-diving the whole time.
