WTB: First Drysuit!

Post by Cupronickel »

As the title states, Im in the market for my first drysuit. My budget only allows for a used suit, and undergarments. Looking for a shell suit (had enough neoprene for a while), and undergarments, and a hood. Im 5'11 190 lbs wear a size 12 or 13.

As I recall, David Fessler mentioned at Federal Way UWS they have the fusion one for 699 on sale.

Check the closeouts and used section of local shops and various online retailers (DRIS, Scubatoys, etc.), you are more likely to find a quality suit that way than on craigslist, although certainly deals can be found there too. Avoid ebay like the plague, you don't want to buy a used dry suit that you can't inspect beforehand.

However, the Fusion deal going on right now is excellent and will likely be the best bang for your buck. You aren't likely to find a suit that solid that's also new with no wear and tear.

Didnt realize I could get a new suit for that much... Hopefully the sale lasts a few days since I likely cant make it down there until tomorrow afternoon at the earliest. Is the one at TL Sea the same price Verinne?

I'm sure if you make kissy sounds to David, he'll take care of you. He's always taken very good care of nwdc divers. (and divers in general)

Give Dave a call at Federal Way Underwater Sports. He will work with you if he can. He's a good egg.

BTW, for your size, I'd suggest the 2xl. You'll fit a L/XL, but you'll like the size up better.

I'm 6ft, 180, and while a L/XL fits, its tight in the shoulders. The 2xl is abit easier, but try both and see how it feels.

Downside, abit of bubble to deal with, but mostly when coming up from a 200ft+ dive. Rec dives I'm not nearly carrying that amount of air in my suit.

IMHO, diving a fusion, you dont need a drysuit course. Its the easiest suit to dive because its not a bag, but form fitting. Any accomplished diver can walk you through drysuit usage in 10 minutes.

Buy me a Build Your own Slam at Dennys and I'll walk you through a drysuit course with a fusion... :)

By walk through do you mean do a dive with me? If so you have a deal sir. I was pretty apprehensive about the course anyways. Seems most people think it was a waste of money other than learning how to deal with an inversion....

If it's an orientation course then the value is what it is - some think it's worth it, some don't. If it's a certification course it means you can rent a dry suit should you need to in the future.

Im now the way too proud owner of a White's Fusion One drysuit thanks to Josh at TL Sea!!!! Ended up with a L/XL, flexed all around, bent over and squatted down and it felt good, didnt seem to feel the shoulder tightness that was mentioned by Jeff above. Cant wait to try it out!

Congrats!! Did you do all the above stretches with your undergarment on? You will really like the suit. I added SiTech dry glove rings to mine, might want to consider them one day.

Correct, getting weighting and how to invert are the biggies(and inflator runaway). I'd argue that inverting is a situation where you've already screwed up, don't screw up

And Jeff we'll have to set that dive up sometime soon. Gotta get my inflator hose put on my reg, and hopefully get some help trimming my seals (messing up a seal is not financially possible for me after buying the suit).

You shouldn't need to trim seals

I thought they had to be trimmed a little to fit individual wrists, necks etc? They felt pretty tight to me, the neck seal more so. But Ive also read that if you are still concious, its not too tight...

They might need trimming....they should feel snug but not seriously uncomfortable. You shouldn't have tingling, numbness, or redness in your hands. The neck seal is likely to feel uncomfortably tight at first, but certainly you shouldn't have redness in your face, feel light-headed, or dizzy.

The owner's manual should have some tips, DUI has some as well (even though it's not a DUI suit), and there are plenty of videos on YouTube. Go slow and carefully take off a ring at a time. If you are at all unsure about trimming your seals go back to the shop and get help. It's pretty nerve wracking, especially on your first baby suit. :)

On a fusion, unless you are on the large size, it shouldn't need trimmed
