Dive Site Name: Foulweather Bluff

Skill Level: Intermediate

Current Sensitive: Yes. Dive at slack. Use this predictor.

Location/Address: The public access beach at the end of NE Twin Spits Road, Hansville WA.

Directions: Here's a Google Map of the location.

Free Parking: Yes, limited.

Staging Area: None except for the beach.

Surface Swim: Short.

Nearby Facilities: None.

Special Considerations: Private property to either side.

Maximum Depth: >90 ft.

Known Hazards: Boat traffic.

Dive Site Description: Eel grass and a silt bottom start shallow and then descend rapidly into Hood Canal. This site is not exactly at Foulweather Bluff, more to the north and somewhat protected from the currents coming around from nearby Point Nopoint, where the Hood Canal meets the Admiralty Straits. For all the exchange you'd think the vis would be better but our experience was pea soup. Sea pens and occasional sea whips start at 50-60ft. Lots of crabs and flatfish. Silt. A good place to make mud pies. Look out for downwelling currents; we had one deeper, not strong but enough to make me angsty. The best part of the dive is shallow, under the private dock at about 15ft. Lots of tubesnouts and toilets, sculpin, and one-armed crabs. A meh change-of-pace in our eternal quest for the best local shore dive.
