Kinda reminds me of those college house parties - everyone shows up trying to, ahem, get some ... and everyone ends up passed out in a big pile!

Faster isn't always better ... geoducks and anemones certainly take all their sweet time! Don't know whether that applies to stars!

Sorry to burst your bubbles, cuz I know you're all having GREAT fun with this!
BUT....
As titillating as it would seem, Sea Stars don't reproduce by direct contact or having big orgies.
Chances are, what you're seeing here is a bunch of Sea Stars capitalizing on a really good meal!
And according to a recent study I read, a really good meal rates just about as high on the pleasure scale as...well....er...you know!

I figured a diver had a submersible IPOD with some Barry White and all the starfish got "excited"... Oh well, I can still believe that even starfish get lucky when Mr. White sings!

When we were up in Nanaimo in January, I noticed this behavior in multiple sites. Always ocher stars; the other starfish were found scattered singly as one usually finds them. I wondered about it at the time. I haven't seen it happening down here further south.
