Computer Settings

I currently have a Liquivision XEO and a Suunto Vytec. I dive with the LV on my wrist and that is my primary computer. I usually dive with the Suunto in gauge mode and I mainly have it as a backup mounted to my camera rig. When I have dove the Suunto in dive mode, it often goes into deco while my LV doesn't even come close. I feel my Suunto is way to conservative (duh), but I also believe my LV is too liberal. I have done a lot of research on settings for both computers. However, I am hesitant to change the settings without completely understanding what is being changed. Plus, I trust people on this board more than random people on the internet. Would someone mind recommending/explaining the options for the Xeo to make it more conservative and options (if any) to make the Suunto less conservative? I'd be happy to take this offline if you don't want to post recommendations to a larger audience. Thanks for your help.

BTW - I am mainly looking for advice on the LV. I may ditch the Vytec soon :-)

Do you know what gradient factors (GF) are currently set at in the Xeo?
Here is a well known and readable article on the "m-values" used in the Xeo's buhlmann model. The gradient factors are percentages of maximum allowable m-values.
http://wrobell.it-zone.org/decotengu/_d ... values.pdf

To make your Xeo more like your vytec you probably need to increase the GF low and reduce the GF high. A common default setting is 30/85. If you change this to 50/70, the Xeo will be more like the Vytec. But not exactly vytec like.

The vytec is a bit of a black box, all you can do is reduce the conservatism to "0". Its still going to penalize you heavily on 2nd dives of the day though.

Thanks, you are correct the current setting is at 30/85 and thank you very much for the article. I will definitely read through this.

On the Vytec, I don't mind diving it even though it is pretty conservative. However, the second dives are the ones that I get penalized for as you mentioned.

Suunto has a very restrictive and incredibly penalizing bubble model.

Liquivisions are awesome. Except when they crap out on you.

The answer seems to be: two bungied LV's on each dive.

Actually, I haven't had a LV fail since I added a second one.

I don't get the appeal of the Shearwater other than the AA battery. So haven't jumped on that hype train yet.

I don't remember what using a dive computer is like anymore.

:koolaid:

Besides the fact its easier to read, locally serviced, and way more flexible?

Nah, who needs it

Guess you've had at least one fail and are still wearing 2?

Cause they don't randomly crap out in the first place.

My Xens have all failed multiple times. :)

How do you figure easier to read? Xen seems easier to read. Big multicolor LCD numbers

The shearwater digits are huge and proportional to value. And you can change the colors depending on your tastes/vision.

And they don't shit the bed, period. Little tanks.

Plus Shearwater has an excellent track record with customer service and product stability, whereas LV used their early customer base as test subjects with little support when their units failed. Left a lot of people anti LV as a result.

Well, figured Shearwater has a lot going for it since a lot of divers are using them or switching to them.

I do like my Xens...when they are working.

How do you do deco stops on a shearwater? Xen I just tap the side three times to start the timer

Are you talking about the gauge mode stopwatch? Honestly it seems ridiculous to spend $150 for decoplanner and $800 for a buhlmann computer running the exact same algorithm; then use it with a decoplanner based plan in gauge mode.

But if you set it in gauge mode I believe its left button then right button.

Are you using the RGBM add-on?

There is no RGBM option in the Shearwater, there is a VPM option/upgrade available.

"RGBM" is Suunto's proprietary algorithm and not the actual RGBM which is made by Weinke and available via the GAP software.

I was talking about the LV Option: http://www.getfreephase.com/

I use that now and have had it go more Conservative than a cobalt and vyper. Granted I had it set to the most conservative value at that time as I was trying to gauge how it matched up to a buddies Suunto computer.
