Watch underwater video of Hood Canal
Rare, underwater video showing conditions in Hood Canal during a September low-oxygen event is available for viewing by the public at the state Department of Fish and Wildlife Web site, wdfw.wa.gov/hab/hood_canal_oxygen.htm.
The streaming video shows the effects of low oxygen levels in the water on marine life, including lingcod, rockfish and an octopus, near Sund Rocks on the west side of Hood Canal near Hoodsport.
In recent years, marine life die-offs due to low-oxygen levels in Hood Canal have grown in frequency and duration. Excessive amounts of nitrogen from human and natural sources stimulate algae blooms in the canal. When the algae decomposes, it robs the water of dissolved oxygen.
