DIW 12-28-2009

Post by cardiver »

Diverbob and I met at 0700 this morning to take advantage of the minimal currents on DIW. Predicted slack was 0745 and we dropped on the wall at 0800 and took off to the north in completely still water. Viz was a milky 15 fsw and water temp was a balmy 55 degrees.
All of the usual suspects were there, including one of the largest gpo's I've seen at this dive site. There were also four males and one female wolfie there to entertain us. This is the first time I've been here taht I didn't see any gunnels at all.
After about 30 minutes the flood began and we rode it back to the entry point. As we came up over the wall the current stopped completely again and we had a liesurely swim back to the entry.
Thanks for showing up, Bob and I look forward to diving this site with you again.

Sounds great! I'm sorry I missed it. It was just to early for me to make that slack time. Keep me in mind for your next Monday.

Very nice pics. I think I found that same dendronotis rufus there yesterday ... north wall, right? Yesterday there were two of them there.

Tons of clown dorids in the "flats" above the wall.

I decided to bring the WAL yesterday, and it ended up being the wrong selection. I took a few shots, but nothing much worth posting.

Fritz and Joyce found a coupla lumpies in the shallows, and Joyce got some real nice shots ...

Ron...we dropped in about 30 minutes after you and we had water temp about 46 degrees. I would like to dive the warmer part of the wall...tell me where it is!

I thought that sounded warm when I wrote it.
I went back and double checked my dive log and it shows 51 not 55.......

Dive computer temperatures are typically not very accurate.

My X1 showed water temps at DIW yesterday to be around 48 degrees ...

Ron, thanks for the great dive this morning! It's been a while since I have been to DIW. The conditions were perfect this morning. We saw a dive boat anchored on the wall when we surfaced, first that I have seen that at this site. Not sure who it was. I am now scarred when it comes to big Octo's. I kept thinking that a tentacle was was going to try and snatch me into it's den thanks to Grateful Diver's recent story about an encounter at Redondo. :nervous: I lost count of the GPO's that I saw. It seemed that every other nook and cranny that I looked in had one. It's a toss for me as to which dive site is my favorite, DIW or Sunrise. There are both awesome and a real treat to be able to dive them.

I only got one decent shot from yesterday ... still learning how to get the lighting right when I use the wide angle lens.

Anyway, for such a youngun, this lady sure has a lot of wrinkles. Mebbe botox would help ...

Great pictures! Iespecially like the Moss Head and the Sturgeon Poacher DiverBob! =D> Now you just need to get that close to some of those GPO's, just don't touch them, and you should be fine :hah: :nervous: :evil4:

Good looking little lady Bob. You find her on the N. side about 2/3 of the way up the wall? Small den it appears. If so she's pretty shy and that's a good picture.

Joyce should have her pictures when she gets them back. The camera swap seemed successful but does create logistic problems.

Darn it. Worst 3 days of the year to be dry as far as currents go.

Glad eveyone had great dives on one of the best shore dive sites in the Sound!

That wolfie doesn't look too happy about you taking her picture. Maybe she expected something in return?
