Eggs At Les Davis

Post by dwashbur »

This first picture is really bad as far as the lingcod goes, but thankfully you can see the mass of eggs behind him clearly. I include this just to give an idea how enormous the egg deposit is: guard-daddy was a good five feet long, and what you can see is about half of the egg cluster. The second shot shows the egg mass after he moved off. This patch was two feet across at the very least. Great promise for the next generation!

I'm always amazed at how large those things can be. I think maybe more than one female contributed to that one. Always reminds me of a chunk of Styrofoam.

Holy cow! That's a big egg mass. You're right, that is a good sign.

I dove Les D on Sunday and I am happy to report that I spotted 5 different nests of eggs. Since I was teaching, I didn't have a camera with me. I don't recall seeing that many nests last year, so it is a very good sign that the population is getting stronger.

We also spotted a very large GPO in the open. That has never happened to me, at Les D, during the day. It was about 8 feet across. When it bolted, it was about 3.5-4 fee long. Head was bigger than a basketball. Simply amazing!

We also saw several large ling cod egg masses at Three Tree South side last Friday. They were in the tires and on the cabin cruiser. One was mature enough to see the embryos moving inside the individual eggs.
