i have an old scuba instruction book from the 60s that actually describes using the tank that way as a self-rescue technique. i'll see if i can dig it out and scan that page...

You're right! I didn't see that initially. The mesh pocket hanging down with his wallet in it is a potential entanglement hazard as well. :nervous:

As a serious point of inquiry: would using the air from the tank in this way introduce water into the tank, or does the high pressure eliminate that potential problem? (obviously not a primary concern for the user at the time).

I had thought about that before. I would say the high pressure would eliminate the possibility of water entering the tank.

water pressure at 100ft (4ata) = 58.8psi
tank pressure is variable but more than a few hundred psi

unless the valve orifice is huge, the outrushing gas will easily push the water out.
