Since I see a smaller one in the background, I suspect that they have been harvested for food consumption. This is what we call an "Orange Peel Nudibranch", but in the Russian far east and parts of Alaska (formerly Russian) this species is called "Tochni" and is a food item that is eaten raw.Zen Diver 2 wrote:Thank you Calvin, I was wondering the same thing...Tangfish wrote: What is it doing out of the water?

Such culinary fare is DEFINITELY not for me! To each his own, I guess!

Just brought it to the surface to show the other divers how big it was and take a pic. It was abour 15-17 inches long...I brought 2 up about the same size and didnt think they would beleave me how big it was...Sure glad to here John is back in the water and getteing wet again..I took a typ I hit a few years ago doing a deep dive off the cape...We were diving the pinnacles @ 160ft for 38mins after diving 3-5 dives every day that week for the glass bottom boat...

John is a walking encyclopedia
Dave, not to nitpick or anything, but isn't taking it out of the water bad for the poor nudi? Time to invest in an underwater camera my friend! I usually use a piece of dive gear like a backup light for size reference if I'm trying to capture scale to show someone later.

I felt real bad for bringing them to the surface and out of the water...But the other divers would of never beleave me 17''Nudi sure Dave all the way home on a 2 hr ride back home...See me holding her just like a little baby w/both hands?? I have never seen one that big before around the sound before at the largest 9-10''....We were looking for king crab while getting towed by the sled

I saw the largest Orange Peel nudi I've ever seen before, in Barkley Sound this past October. We put a dive light beside it to show the size.

Calvin, you tow it behind a boat, and the divers can hold onto it, like a scooter, but by tilting it, can maneuver up or down. (like your hand held outside a car window on the freeway!)

I never take nudi's out of the water either!Cold_H2O wrote:I have always been taught that Nudi's breath thru their skin.
So taking one out of the water will cause it some stress.
I just pound 'em where I see 'em.

KJC coming back to AK??
So we were wondering when KJC's next big trip to Alaska is? Scuba Scott says he's planning on being up here at the end of March. what do you think of that?
As for the outfit I'm not sure that it will last all that long. He has doubled his weight in 5 weeks. It actually fits in the body its just his short legs... poor guy. Oh yeah do you think you could send a spear tip this way? Let me know what the price is and we will take care of that. One spear tip just isn't enough especially when the lings run away with the spear huh?

It all depends on the herring and when there is enough spawn along the beaches...Thats when they will open it and u dont want to be in the middle of the boats...
Boil under the boat..
Usually the middle to the end of march..
Time to move...
