Hmmm.... question for all you long time Winter divers in the PNW.
Just WHEN does our amazing Winter viz arrive!?!
Is it only when we've had a week or two without rain?
Just wondering...
WHEN DOES OUR "AMAZING" WINTER VIZ ARRIVE?!?

Yeah, I was wondering that too. I think we got spoiled last fall.

It is only when you or I do not dive. I do not beleive it since I haven't dove it. It is a fish tail that scuba divers tell all the time.
In 10 years of diving up the Puget Sound, I have just about the same vis in the summer as winter. Just different.
Summer you deal with the bloom and in the winter run off or freshwater. I have had great vis in the summer as well as the winter. I am so use to 10' vis that whenever I get anything more I am happy. Be it 25 or 50'.

There is rarely amazing viz in Puget Sound but better viz is when it has not been raining for a while and at sites with less runoff.
Sometimes the best viz is late summer after all of the plankton bloom is done for the year and before the rains begin.
Northern Vancouver Island usually has great viz during the winter especially Quadra and north of that.

We had 20 to 50 feet of vis in Nanaimo this weekend . . .
But, even our first dive on the Breton was only 20 feet, there was a bit of silt from some river somewhere blowing past us.
Last dive was close to 50 feet in places, and it was downright strange to be in such clear water . . . strange, but pleasant.
