Ascent could bring bends, 'chokes' to miners

Dr. Bailus Walker, an environmental and occupational medicine expert at Howard University Medical Center, says one concern is the effect the barometric pressure will have on their bodies as they're brought up. "You'll see muscular aches and pains in the joints called 'the bends' as a result of the decompression."

ignoring the increase in density of air:

1.2 kg / m^3 (density of air) * 670 m = 804 kg /m ^ 2

[ 804 kg / m ^ 2 ] / [ 10332 kg / m ^ 2/atm ] = 0.07 atm or 2.5 fsw.

hmmmm..... magnitude makes sense when compared to the 8,000 ft cabin pressure of airliners, but even adding in the change in density with depth, i don't see how you're getting DCS out of that...

Hmmm, perhaps there is tissue compartment that reacts to being stuck with 60 other miners for months underground?

Sounds pretty silly. Skydivers don't get bent on the way up and they climb unpressurized from ground level to over 10,000ft AGL in a matter of just a few minutes.

the google suggests that some of the first observed cases of the bends were also in miners, but those were in mines that were artificially pressurized to keep water out of them.

That would do it.

Pressurization is the key there. If the miners were working in compartments under pressure, then absolutely; DCS is going to be a factor. However, there is no indication they were in a pressurized environment, and the shaft that was opened to rescue them would have released the pressure anyway, so if they were going to get bent, it would have already happened.

Proper gas switches in this case would be scrub brush to bar soap to body wash....
