online SAC / RMV Calculator and Rock Bottom Calculator

Post by spatman »

i've created a very simple online SAC Rate / RMV Calculator that i could use some feedback on:

http://divenerd.com/sac-rmv/

i formatted it mostly for mobile devices, but i'd like to hear comments from users on all devices/browsers. please let me know if there are any errors in my math, or if the current layout is broken or renders strangely in any way on your device.

also, any comments on other features or info is welcome as well.

i'll be updating the design over time, and might also add other online tools.

thanks.

Works very well on my phone (running android 2.2). It formats very nicely and I especially like that you made sure my browser knows the fields are numeric so it even pulled up the 10-key instead of the alpha keyboard. Nice touch. Great font pitch too. Nice and readable.

Not that I usually care what my SAC rate is, but this is very cool.

Look and feel is great - simple, clean, fast. Results seem about right too - didn't verify it but based on the information for one dive it produced a number that is in the ball-park. Don't know how you could work it into your calculator, but the biggest hassle for me in calculating out SAC for a given dive is finding my average depth. My computer is old and doesn't give me that information directly - the application that I download the dive data into doesn't do it either. I end up having to manually plug all my time at depth increments into my calculator to come up with the average depth. Oh well - I don't figure out my SAC very often. I know roughly where I'm at on my consumption and when planning gas volume requirements I use a number that's quite a bit more conservative than actual.

Nice! :supz:
Any chance it could be changed to save the data fields for quicker recalcs?
(i.e--so you don't have to reenter all the fields for a 'do-over')

if you hit the back button, it should preserve the data. i could add a link that emulates that.

ok, scratch that. a javascript back button is buggy. use the browser's back button.

No, we were thinking it should have user accounts and store our data in a SQL database. Also, it needs to graph the output against previous dives and your friends dives. There will need to be a social-network feature to add friends for this purpose. An email alert should go out anytime a friend beats your....RMV (boy that was a close one). Also, can you add a simple current prediction tool that takes NOAA tide predictions and does a quick adjustment for current meteorological conditions (i.e., a high or low pressure system). Thanks, Matt.

/me ducks for cover.

Being serious for a second I just want to say that I admire this calculator in its present form. Dead simple, the end. More is not always better, and you get it. I get that you get it.

I love this, .64 cf per min is my outcome.

There are other SAC calculators out there on the web, and frankly, I'm not sure it's something people really need to use often... but I think this is a particularly nice implementation. Is there any way this might find itself permanently linked in to the board? I know there are sticky topics etc, but how about just a basic page for links to tools and cool resources (tide/current tables, NOAA's online charts etc). Failing that, maybe just a separate forum with each topic being a link? Someone had some nice bathymetric plots too, IIRC.

Speaking of sick mental images, Matt, will you please 'help' Doug change his avatar since he seems unable to do so on his own? Humanity thanks you.

If changing it to something else is not feasible maybe you could just reduce the size. I was thinking maybe 1x1.

Does Doug's virtual size really need reducing? These *are* very cold waters after all.

Works well on my blackberry storm, cool tool, nice job!

Dumb question time:
So can I take the cubic ft per minute calculation and multiply it by the CF of a different bottle and come up with a theoretical air time for that bottle? In other words if I have .75 cf/min consumption rate and have a 13cf bail-out bottle I would theoretically have 9.75 minutes of air to beat cheeks for topside?
Cheers!
