Seeking advice on diving Maui

Post by oldsalt »

My family flies to Maui for 10 days in November. We dived Molokini, including the back side, on a previous trip as well as several other charter boat dives. Can any of you recommend some shore dives we could do while there?

My favorite shore dive on Maui is the old Mala Pier (Wharf). It is in Lahaina, by a boat launch so keep an eye out for traffic. I also enjoy Five Caves Five Graves down in Kihei depending on which part of Maui you are going to be in. Here is a thread from a little while ago http://www.nwdiveclub.com/viewtopic.php ... ilit=+maui

Have fun!

Jacob: Thanks. This will really help. We are at Lahaina this time. We stayed at Kihei last time. - Curt

Honolua Beach is up north and, especially if water conditions are calm, is a lovely dive. You go out along the wall and come back over the top of it in the shallows. Only problems are that you are parking on the road (leave NOTHING of value in the car) and it's a couple hundred yard walk to the entry.

My friend Tim Dekle has a site with a lot of shore diving information on it: alohashoredivers.com

+1 for TIm's site and Tim in general.

If you want to do a guided shore dive there's the ever wacky Shaka Doug. His website hurts my soul but rumors of his service are legendary.

There's also boring old shorediving.com:

And of course the usual Scuba board Hawai'i forum... where all questions are answered ad nauseum:

LCF and Eric: I've checked out all of the recommended websites. Thanks. I should have no problem finding some good dives. I've had very few bad ones. My primary buddy while I am there will be my son. He will be there with his family, so the possibility of a guided dive or two when he is commited is a good suggestion. Thanks again. - Curt

Just got back from Maui the 29th. Checked out Honaloa bay and slaughterhouse. Don't get your hopes up, locals were surfing at both locations, and pretty darn rough entry. We ended up diving five caves and a new site to me called white rock. White rock is the beach just south of the Fairmont in Wailea. Very nice beach with a sandy level entry. Went to the left, for some great coral and the possibility of eagle rays and dolphins, ( and found both). I did not dive the north end but the snorkleing and coral was very good there, and I'm sure the diving will be.
