Welcome Loretta!
Go ahead and give in to the Water, as it draws you to it every week.
It's amazing to see a simple hoby turn in to a life long addiction.
Meeting new people and sharing a responsibility of a good buddy is what Rocks for me! :supz:
Hope to see you at a Dive Site soon!

Hi my name is Bob. I live in Longview, I started diving way back in 1971 when I was 14. I continued to dive until 1981 when I lost all my gear to some.... well anyway I couldn't afford to replace it at the time. Now recently my wife and I got invited to Loreto on the Sea of Cortez for 10 days and I asked her if she would like to try it and she said (emphatically)yes. So we took an OW course and will do our checkout dives this coming weekend. Then on to mexico, where we will take some more classes, and enjoy the wildlife.
As it turns out my wife, Melissa's son, also wants to dive, and lives 1 block from Alki beach. That will be cool too.
I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible in the future, in the water.

Hi All, I'm Jerry and new to your board. I've recently re-certified for the third time. Basiclly I'm looking for a resource for diving partners and experiences. My return to diving was in support of my daughter who is studying to be a maritime archeologist. As you all know it's easy to get hooked and I'm not resisting it. Since my daughter is at school in
Oregon my partner is not always available. I'm 51 and have 60+/- dives over 30 years.

If you're interested, I think you'd really get into conducting REEF surveys on your dives up here. It's fun and it really adds to the adventure of diving in the Pacific NW. There's a basic list of about 40 fish and 40 inverts you'd need to learn how to ID first, but you'd do it in a snap, I'm sure!

Also, I'm always looking for folks who are interested in helping out with some other surveys we do - for UW's Hood Canal Low Dissolved Oxygen project. If you know what you're looking at down there, I can use you!

So, just some things to possibly look forward to (if they sound like your cup o' tea) after you get comfortable in the water and feel you've got the diving/safety thing mastered.

- Janna :)
Janna,
I would definitely be interested. Where can I get more Info!
Thanks, Anthony

Hello Everyone,
My name is Anthony. I’m a brand new OW certified diver. I just finished my final dive Sunday. I've freedived and snorkeled in tropical water many many times. My only cold water experience besides my OW class was freediveing at Titlo Park in Tacoma WA. It was very cold in my 5mm wetsuit but was still fun. My first OW dive I freaked at 30ft. The dive master thought I was going to do a scud missile launch to the surface but I got myself under control and finished the dive safely. Now, I'm excited to get some dives in to build my confidence.

Congratulations on your accomplishment Anthony! Good job! :salute:

And congratulations on handling your panic well... most of us have had similar experiences. Thanks for talking about yours. My experience is that lots of folks have those kind of challenges but then feel awkward jor silly talking about them. Those common, but challenging, experiences that we all have need to be shared! ...along with the delight that is diving! \:D/

Keep diving, it gets easier and funner!

Welcome to NWDC!

Helo everyone. My name is Dave and I was just certified (for OW diver) in early April of 08. I am an electrician by trade (systems guy). I grew up in the Seattle area (Auburn and then S. Seattle) but spent a lot of time on the Oregon Coast when I was a kid. After 27 years in Seattle and 5 years in Oakland, CA (also lots of traveling) I decide Portland, OR was the place for me.
I had always wanted to learn to dive but just had never gotten around to it until now. Now I am kind of obsessed with diving. I want to go all the time. I am really in to diving the northwest. Not just because I don't have the money to travel to warm places but also because of the challenges involved with a cold water environment. It also seems cool to me to dive all these places that I grew up around. It's like going to the same beaches I went to as a kid but you don't have to stop at the water. You get to see what's beyond.

Good to be here, Dave

Why not. I grew up swimming in freshwater lakes and streams. Joined the Navy and went to the foreign country of South Carolina. Hey, they talk different from the west coast and eat different food. My room mates got tired of me laying around and knew I loved to snorkel. They asked me if I wanted to stay down longer....... My first year a good day of diving was viz of 5 feet looking for sharks teeth in the Edistow river outside Charleston, S.C. Since then I have managed to dive Baharain, Bali, Phuket, Japan, Chile, California, Mexico, Hawaii, United Arab Emerites (UAE), Bonaire, Belize, Honduras (Utilia), Vanuatu, Fiji, British Columbia, Washington state...... I have managed to make it to Dive Master/Control Specialist in 1995 and am now the bane and boon of dive instructors. I was taught the DM runs the dive and the instructor is just there to observe the skills. When I fun dive I photograph. I started with a Nikonos III and IV and moved into digital a few years back. I dive slow. Friends have been known to joke that when I enter the water the boat won't have to lift anchor to recover me. My partner is a good match and dives as avidly as I do. I have seen some amazing things in the water and had the ....... scared out of me at least 4 times. Like John I took a nasty DCS hit and it took me 6 months to get back in the water. That was several years ago and I still dive once or twice a month. I started in 0ft viz and a good portion of my diving has been in green waters and I find more things in green water than blue. Blue is nice. Can't tell when I warm up my wet suit ;-) and no worries about leaks.

Agree +1 here!

Steve joined Feb 2009 and did his first post on Apr 2011. That must be some sort of record!

Welcome Steve! Come up to the Puget Sound and dive with me on a Thursday! :smt064

Wow. I had totally forgotten about this thread. Kind of cool you dug it up. Welcome to the site, Steve! I wonder if I should update mine- I've done a lot of diving in the last 5 years.

Chris here, aka Linedog someday I'll tell ya the story. My first dive was in 2000, Key West, Joe's Tug. OK so it was a bit deep for me with a fresh hotel cert but it did the trick. Got a real cert a year and a half ago, someday I'll get AOW and a few others. I never have enough time for anything it seems like. I dive when I can and am still working on my skills. I work for Century Link installing/maintaining and testing their fiber optic systems. Someday I'll dive a Thursday with Bassman! Yes I know what Bluejuice is.

Hi all, It's pronounced "Base- Man" Bass Guitar, my other hobby.
My Name is Keith, located in Lakewood Wa near Ft Lewis Army base.I got O W certified for my 40th birthday as a gift to myself. I have been diving for about two and a half years now, 200+ dives logged. Tom nic and I got certified together and have been primary dive buddies ever since. Currently I am Rescue diver trained and my next step will be Nitrox and a wreck or deep cert. weather or not I go for the additional certs for the Master Scuba Diver is not important to me but the idea of "Rescue Diver" just makes good sense to me, for myself and my dive buddies.
As a full time Job, I work for Alaska Airlines as an aircraft Inspector here in Sea-Tac. I also Play the Bass guitar at my local church and in a classic rock band called "Bluejuice" Ask me about "Bluejuice" when you meet me and I'll gladly tell you how / why we came up with that name.

I think we have some of the best diving, right here in the Puget Sound! Although I enjoy going wherever I can to explore new diving.
Sitka, Alaska was great! Peurto Vallarta was fun {very warm) and the San Juans are great too! My travels will never come close to Calvins but I will do what I can as long as my physical body allows me too.

My daughter,17 {Mouse} got OW certified and I hope to dive the Great Barrier Reef (Austrailia) with her some day. What great way to spend some quality time with my daughter! Not sure if she has totaly caught the dive fever yet, but we have fun.
the PADI slogan "Meet People , Go Places and Do Things" realy rings true!
Oh how the years go bye!
I'm now 45, with 500+ dives, Volunteer Diver at Point Defiance Aquarium. Going to Bonaire in May 2011 And I survived a shore dive @ Deception Pass.
Sure is fun to be reading all of these Bio's.
Joshua Smith? (aka: nailer, back in the day) from O/W cert, to now a re-breather tech guy. :supz:

Glad this thread got revived! When I first posted in it, I didn't know as many of the people on the board as I do now, and it was great fun to go back and read the bios.

Not much has changed in mine, except a lot of dives. I'm still in love with caves, only now I've got a Cave cert; I've done a little staged decompression diving, but it doesn't obsess me. I got my DM last year to help Peter with classes. I still have the same job, the same horse, and two obnoxious cats, but we lost the dog a couple of years ago.
