Richmond Beach Park critter collection

Post by YellowEye »

Hi

My kids' marine life class is having a field trip to Richmond Beach next week to do some beach combing. A buddy and I are thinking of going on a dive to bring up some critters for the class to see.

Does anybody know anything about diving Richmond Beach Park? It looks like a long walk to the beach. Other than that, how is the dive, is there a direction or depth to head to for best results? We'll be going at low tide, does it get super flat or muddy?

We want to be as gentle as we can on the critters, and we'll always keep them underwater and we'll return them when we're done. Any advice on which critters might be most interesting for the kids to see while at the same time being easiest on the critters?

Anyone is welcome to join us.

Thanks!
-Eric

IIRC, Richmond Beach is in the Northwest Shore Dives book. Mine is in storage, otherwise I'd quote it directly... I've never done it, but I have to admit that it's crossed my mind. I will be watching this thread with with interest

Sure enough, it is in NW Shore Dives! Thanks for the tip, I didn't remember even hearing about this site before.

Any other info on the site or critter collection appreciated!

Eric:
I've dived Richmond Beach several times, but it has been awhile. There used to be concrete anchors and ropes to guide you to the different "features", mostly rocks and concrete blocks. By swimming around you can find bottom types which include mud and gravel/pebbles. One of the mosquito fleet boats, the Utopia, wrecked and burned there - perhaps a century ago. I found some debris that I was told was from that wreck. It is a long walk with gear on, but I have done it and I'm older than dirt. Things were cleaner then.
