Redondo hardly ever disappoints

Post by dphershman »

We went to Redonodo to find some lumpies today but came up empty handed.... for lumpies at least. But we did find some other cool critters!

Viz has improved quit a bit this past week. Its cold, but well worth it.

Oh, this makes me SO frustrated!

I've seen lumpies. They're cool, and I love them . . . but this thing of finding Cockerel's dorids is driving me nuts. And when I tried to go to Redondo to enjoy this bounty, I get my butt blown nearly to Japan :)

Bob and I on our second dive, hit some serious ass current (the Redondo River). Luckily only lasted about 10 minutes, but we were both right on the cusp of calling it.

Wow! I've never been there when there was more than a gentle tug.

If you want to find Limacia cockerelli the best place to look is the concrete pipe. I found a couple dozen clustered on the lower third of the pipe close to the ground in a patch of small barnacles yesterday. Look at the middle section on the downslope side. There's usually something interesting on or under that thing. Once I even found an Atlantic Lobster!

That's where I've been finding them as well.

For the uninitiated ... they're really tiny, and you have to look closely and carefully or you may be looking right at them and not realize it.

Just wondering . . . is there a reason why so many Grunt Sculpins can be found at Redondo right now? It seems I've gone months without seeing one and now I'm seeing 3 or more on every dive at Redondo.

There have been times where is wasn't unusual to see 10 or 12 or more of the tiny ones. That being said we dove there Tuesday and I didn't even see one.

I didn't see any on Saturday either. Too bad...

Most of the ones I've been seeing are about the size of a lumpie and are out in the open, away from all of the structures. Although I have seen 1-2 rather large adults, it's been mostly teeny-tiny baby ones.

what a difference a day makes

Post by olyvtx »

It's been awhile since I've been out, missed all that great vis we had in Oct. So, Saturday i went out to Redondo and saw pretty much.......shrimp! Sure, there's the gpo's under the boats, the perch and occasional gunnel. But I didn't see my target objectives, the juvi wolfeel and the cockerelli.
Well, what a difference a day makes. Dan specifically described where the cockerelli were and I PM'd Grateful Diver for the location of the wolfeel (she wasn't there Saturday when i dove). So, back I went and there they all were. Was able to get my first so-so pics of a juvi wolfeel, cockerelli and barnacle-eating nudis. Good times...

LOVE the Cockerel's picture -- the curvy shapes and neutral colors of the tubeworms make the perfect background to show off the slug!
