Additional books for my library

Post by coulterboy »

Ho-Ho-Ho!

Can somebody please post on this thread the desirable books one can purchase and possibly where on these areas. I need to update my dive book resources in my library. Sadly, my only book was published in the '70's or early '80's about the Puget Sound, and I need some current/new books.
a. Fish/Underwater wildlife identification
b. Wreck sites

And if there are more interesting topics, you can add that too. I would like to know why you recommend the book. I know, the resources can't be summed up in one book, but there's gotta be a book out there which is considered the desirable compared to another. By the way, I already have a book about the Pacific Northwest Shore Dives.

Thanks.

Tom

Tom,

"Northwest Wreck Dives" by Scott Boyd and Jeff Carr is a good start.

"Marine life of Pacific Northwast" and "Coastal Fishes of the Pacific Northwest" are great books.

Regarding marine life identification, here's a good old thread for you:

I whip out "Northwest Shore Dives", Fischnaller from time to time. ISBN 0-9617106-2-4. I think the last printing is 2000. At least that's what I have. I wonder if current corrections are still ballpark after almost 12 years.

Cap'n Jack's Almanac / Tide Log is a yearly "must have" purchase.

+1 on Fischnaller's book. It is worth every penny even for paying out-of-print. Mine is duct taped together from overuse. :) I have found the corrections to be spot on accurate as recently as just 2 weekends ago.

That's the book I showed you at Edmonds that one time (the big green one -- it is a fantastic book, I have not met one person who did not like it)

Shadow Divers is a good read as well.

For Nudibranchs, Eastern Pacific Nudibranchs, Dave Behrens & Alicia Hermosillo is the one to have.

Also, Certainly More Than You Want To Know About The Fishes of The Pacific Coast by Milton S Love is not only an excellent reference but a pretty good read too and a fantastic buy for such a huge book.

While I am not a fan of the Northeast Wreck diver books  :nutty: here are a couple of good books.

"Submerged" by Dan Lenihan

"Neutral Buoyancy" by Tim Ecott

And when you start feeling or becoming complacent in your diving read "Diver Down" by Michael Ange.

Mishi Carters book "Current and Tide Tables for Dive Planning" is out of print but invaluable if you can find a copy.

Thank so much for the suggestions guys. I now have a list of "to buy" books.

If there are still suggestions from other divers, please keep on plugging them here. I can never have too many books for resource in diving.

Believe it or not, I still open up my very old book every now and then. I don't know if any of you even have or remember this book - "141 Dives from the protected waters of Washington and British Columbia, by Betty Pratt-Johnson", published 1977. I didn't even know that her latest book is now "151 dives, etc", as suggested by Koos. Yeah, 1977- don't laugh. Some of you weren't born yet! :neener: But I think, everybody that made suggestions on books were born before that, with the exception of "Eliseaboo". Elise - you were still a twinkle in your mother's eyes-compliment. :smt119

Thank you once again. :thankyouyellow:

Mark Powell's book is excellent.

+1 on most of the others above.

Strongly second Mark Powell's book, as well as Steve Lewis's Six Skills and other Conversations Mark's book is the most palatable and low-math comprehensive look at decompression as we understand it today that you will find. Steve's book is about the philosophy of diving, and is written in his delightful, self-deprecatory British humor.

Although not a good "What was that fish?" book, I love Milton Love's Certainly More than you Wanted to Know About Pacific Coast Fishes. In addition to having a great many very useful photographs, and a ton of information, the book is full of humorous anecdotes and wryly funny writing. It's also a screaming deal at $29.95 for a book that weighs about five pounds.

And how could I leave out JJ's book, The Fundamentals of Better Diving? :smt064

Fishnaller's book is definitely the Northwest Diver's Bible. He worked really hard to get those current corrections spot on. Steve and his buddy (Far) would often sit on the bottom at the dive sites and watch the particles in the water go past their masks, timing the current until the direction of the particles reversed. :notworthy:

Wow. +1 on this one. It is my most used diving book.

Whelks to Whales is a good book on inverterbrates ... not much for fish, though. If anybody's looking to pick this one up, shoot me a PM. I just won my second copy in a raffle a couple weeks ago, and I really don't need another one.

Pacific Coast Nudibranchs is another good book to have if you're into slugs.

Greg Jensen's book Pacific Coast Crabs and Shrimps Is a wonderful book to have too. I'm particularly impressed by the flow chart in the front of the book that is a tremendous aid to identifying a particular species. If you buy it from Greg he'll even sign it for you.

I'll second the recommendation for any of Andy Lamb's books.

I'm in the middle of that Diver Down book now. Holy grim, batman! Nothing like spending a few hours reading accident reports to put you in a weird state of mind.
